He was considered a rookie in '96. So that is a little strange to have him on the '97 rookie team.

I think that was actually a typo. I'm pretty sure that team is actually the 96-97 rookie class. Those two years are combined into one team.

My major question is why isn't Cole Hamels rated better than it may look, just wondering about that, he is a stud pitcher, and has proved it, just wondering he wasn't in the 87's or 88?

Any chance we would get to see that spreadsheet of all the ratings or is that something OS is not allowed to release?
I still have the spreadsheet and don't know if I can just put it out there. What I can do is answer questions about specific ratings. I'll do them as I have time and I make no guarantees to get to all requests.

            Fair enough?

I think people fail to realize that players must progress and decline.

Phillips may be rated lower than Kent but by year two in a franchise he'll be better than him. Chances are strong.

And the ratings are going off of 3 (maybe 4 years). Can anyone here really say that Phillips has been better than Jeff Kent over the past 3-4 years?

                    No.

Hey TJ, can you post the ratings of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy? The overall ratings, and any other ratings would be appreciated.

Re: Inside the Numbers of Major League Baseball 2K8

You know, every year and every sports title I deal with the same doubts in my mind about players who are rated 100. I guess you could argue they are rated in relation to the players in the league in the year they are being rated. However to me a 100 player indicates a player with absolutely no flaws. In other words, for every category you break a rating down into they are perfect in each one. I don't think you can find that even in the greatest players of all time.

If you do take the argument that they are being rated in relation to the other players in the league for that particular year why is A-Rod not a 100? Who had a better regular season at the plate than him last year? He played a great third base as well. I could see shaving points off his defense from two years ago when he had a really off year defensively. Where are the 2 points coming from that make him a 98 for this year though? Unless of course they have a rating for post season performance. That's not really possible since you can't rate players for that if their teams didn't make the playoffs. I know there is often a "clutch" rating, but for the most part he came up big in clutch situations last year. And like I said, you can't fault him for failing in the clutch in the post season since you can't compare him to every other player in the league. Even so, he wasn't really the cause of the Yanks demise last post season. Jeter choked in the clutch last post season numerous times, but I'm sure his clutch rating is sky high...as it should be since normally he is very clutch.

Some will say the ratings are likely based off a certain number of recent years...let's just arbitrarily say the last three years. I don't buy this either. Year in and year out young players who have a break out year are rewarded with ratings sometimes going into the 90s. Why does this not occur when an older player has a great year? Case in point, Jorge Posada's 84 rating. Contrast Posada's numbers in the big three categories with the player right above him, Brian Mccann:

                        Posada ...338 20 90
                        Mccann...270 18 92

And you can't go with a difference in throwing arms. Posada threw out 23% and Mccann 21%. Both remained healthy all year too..so forget the injury rating. If you want to throw the argument about ratings based on recent years into this consider that Mccann's 06 stats looked just like Posada's 07 stats and Poada's 06 numbers nearly mirrored Mccann's 07. On top of that Posada has consistently put up around a .270-.280 average with about 20-25 homers and near 100 RBI for years now. Mccann has had two full seasons in the bigs. This illustrates perfectly the discrepancy I feel these ratings place on older players year in and year out. Other than an injury factor, which isn't the case for Posada, I can't see rating a guy as consistent who is coming off a career year lower than a younger guy like Mccann. It isn't likely, but for all we know Brian Mccann could be out of the big leagues in a couple years. Again, no disrespect, he looks like a good player, but we've all seen it happen.

Anyways, I didn't mean to turn this into a Yankee discussion nor am I just being a Yankee fan boy. It's just the team I'm most familiar with. I'm simply ranting on all this stuff to display what I feel is the absurdity of giving players ratings of 100, and the general lack of consistency in ratings. Not just in baseball, but in all sports games. I guess it's something we'll have to deal with though. These games are not being made by sports analysts. In the end, I'll take a great game with a hand full of questionable ratings over a crappy game where the players are rated nearly perfectly. In the case of these ratings it's just that...a few questionable ones. Nothing looks completely absurd like in NBA Live this year so I can live with it.

Some off the top of my head
                          Posada should be higher
Mo IS still better than Wagner and Papelbon might be better than both
Becket is to low too(should be ahead of some of those other guys)
Dam i sound like a RedSox fan Will somebody shoot me NOW

As you can see, there are quite a bit of variants in terms of ratings here. So, I'm not going to be posting the complete ratings for anyone, just overall for anyone requested. I'll get to those already posted within the next few minutes.
