    "Catch Up Logic"

Hey Kush, this is half directed towards you only because you had some development time with the game. For years I have cried foul towards EA and their "alleged" catch up programming which turns playing a smart game against the CPU AI into a controller-throwing frenzy of CPU players that all of a sudden become untackleable, unguardable, and un-stoppable when the CPU gets behind in a game. To the best of your knowledge, is this something that was ever discussed, implemented, and/or totally avoided in the 2K programming department?

If I am doing a great job shutting down the CPU, hitting spots, aligning the defense according to the situation, and making all around good decisions and dominating that particular game, am I to expect the CPU to start hitting balls into gaps, seeing defensive errors show up, or other one-sided situtations arise due to the game thinking to itself, "I need to even things up here".?

I am hopeful that we do not have to see this, especially on the harder levels as we progress through the controls and get better, but anyone who has played Madden knows that a 14-3 lead at halftime ultimately leads to a 35-21 loss when the dust settles.

    Your thoughts or insight?

    Thanks,
    SYF

haha, you are referring to what me and my best friend always call "The Madden Effect". Where it seems the refs grease up the football for your fourth quarter possessions and suddenly your defensive back's seem to become ghosts, because the ball can pass right through their hands.

I don't know if there really is a "Madden Effect" because there are also plenty of games where I'll blow a team out, but there sure are times when it seems like something fishy is going on. Anyway, 2K8 definitely has no Madden Effect and I think the only reason 2K7 seemed like it might at times was the randomness of the hitting engine. Have no fear - if you execute a good pitch, 99.99% of the time, you will be pleased with the results.

Thanks Kush, that .01% just swayed me from purchasing this game. I want to be pleased 100 percent. Anyways, I also heard that 9 out of 10 dentists prefer this years batting logic over last years brand.

So the CPU is only going to get a hit on 1 in 10,000 good pitches? Game killer confirmed.

I purchased MVP 05 a couple of weeks ago just because I had hears so much hype about it over the months. Anyway, this game abuses the "catch up" logic in a big way. It makes me wonder why so many people fellate the game so hard when it is obvious there is code to make the computer teams become far better when they get behind.

                    Re: "Catch Up Logic"

Funny this came up. Last night I was playing 2K7 A's vs. Yankee's. I was up 7-2 in the 7th inning. I then made 4 errors in the next 2 innings to see the lead dwindle to 7-6. This was the first and only time this ever happened to me in this game that I can remember, but it was a helpless feeling. Litterally every ball put into play had me worried. I've definitely been apart of these types of games in real life, so while it was very frustrating, it was semi-realistic to watch a team just melt. Ellis, a gold glove caliber 2nd baseman booted two routine grounders for errors and booted a third, but was able to recover and throw out Giambi. My RF dropped a routine fly ball. Both my catcher and pitcher tried to bare hand bunts or high choppers only to drop the ball and my pitcher couldn't catch a toss from my 1B while covering the bag.

Luckily for me, the Yankee's couldn't fully captitalize. In three straight innings, they left runners either on 2nd and 3rd or bases loaded.

If this happens once in a blue moon, then I'm happy...because this is baseball, but if it happens every time you get a large lead, then it ruins games.

it is really annoying but nobody complains when the vice-versa happens, and the User gets the catchup-logic benefit. I've played enough games of College Hoops 2k8 to know that there is a certain point in the game that you will catch fire no matter how badly you play. The computer would just start throwing passes into my hands and no matter who was in my face behind the arc, I would toss it up and the ball would go in.

The game likes to make you feel good, and the only way to make you not bored with the game is to have it be intense at every damn turn.

I agree on both fronts I hate the "catch up logic", and I can't stand it in NBA 2K8.

The last game I played I was executing the pick and roll to perfection. Not doing anything differently the whole time. Then when I needed to use it again to tie the game all of a sudden the pass goes all crazy, and bounces all high or is thrown all hard, or hit's off the back lef of a defender. It's real convenient how this happens at a point where I need to tie the game or take the lead, but otherwise runs perfectly when I am down by 10.
