One thing the umps cant get right is the check swings. Every time i check the 3rd/1st ump always blows the call. really pisses me off.

Re: Are there VARIABLE UMPIRES...yes?...no?
I think there is an option for umps to blow calls.
I've seen checks go both ways but if you don't want that maybe you can turn off the option.
Then again, I'm not even sure it's still in the game and like all those other options now gone why would it still be there?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Are there VARIABLE UMPIRES...yes?...no?
:wink:I agree with Pared. This game has obvious variable umpiring. Last night played a game where the ump consistently called pitches strikes that were completely outside the strike zone, not even touching the strike zone lines. I have the strike zone visible post pitch and it was clear to see. First time I had seen that. Have had other games that pitches will be called balls by the ump that were clearly in the strike zone.Comment

Re: Are there VARIABLE UMPIRES...yes?...no?
Yeah, I see a decent amount of variability, especially with pitches outside and/or low. This is actually quite realistic, because umpires are taught to line their eyes up with the inside edge of the plate and the top of the batters strikezone, so higher and/or inside pitches are easier for them to call than outside/low.
Also, has anyone ever gotten the chance to argue a call? I never have, not once in 2K7, not yet in 2K8 (and I definitely have the setting turned to "on").****************************************

On the subject of ump variability, I had one instance last week where I struck a batter out and with the over the plate view, the pitch was a good 2 inches, if not more of the plate outsideComment

Re: Are there VARIABLE UMPIRES...yes?...no?
I also have noticed that the UMPS are really bad and blow the calls at even the slightest check swing when I use the CLASSIC SWING feature ( button press )
It happens so frequently that I dont even think its a featured variability design...I think the programming was just not designed to allow the hitter much range of check swing motion before calling it a swingComment

I disagree. Maybe Im just good at checking my swing, but I get just as many checks called "no swings" as I do "strikes". It varies just like the umps.
I actually think theres a coralation between the two. It seems like whenever you have an ump with a wide strikzone the base umps seem more forgiving on check swings.
I dont know how many different umps there are, but there are definately a lot. Ive seen tight, wide, low, high, and different variations of these strikezones.
I used to think most zones were too big, but now that baseball is back the K zone shows how wide some umps zones are. I have routinely seen balls 4-5 inches off the plate called strikes.Chicago Cubs

Chitown, are you referring to the CLASSIC SWING mode? ( button press for swings and check swings)
I have no problems checking my swing with the Swing Stick 2.0....I just think the check swinging in the classic hitting mode is a little too unforgiving.Comment
