    MLB 2K Future Unclear

Mods are free to move this thread, but I thought it was important to have this discussion here in the 2K forum...

Today, it appears more likely Take-Two is going to talk to EA about a potential buyout. The company's bottom line is hurting, and outside of Grand Theft Auto IV, it's software line-up is less than strong. According to several analysts, it's not an issue of 'if' EA will buy Take-Two, but more an issue of 'when.'

A buyout would cause problems for several sports franchises, but I want to spend my time talking about the future of 2K Baseball. And needless to say, the franchise is on shaky ground.

There's no doubt in my mind that 2K LA is already in the planning stages of MLB 2K9, but it remains to be seen if it will ever see release. If EA completes a buyout over the next few months, it will be faced with two options: Absorb 2K's baseball product and release it as its own, or go back to its own in house development teams.

This is where things get tricky. EA hasn't released a baseball game in more than a year. And, it hasn't released a MLB baseball title in three years; most of the people who made MVP Baseball what it was have moved on. But as we know, 2K baseball doesn't exactly meet EA's standards for polish. Not to say EA games are bug free, because they aren't. But they always look "slick."

    So what does EA do?

This may be moot. We don't know what's going on behind closed doors. And who knows, maybe EA already has a team working on a next-gen baseball title. Whatever the case, I think there's a good chance that 2K baseball as we currently know it may be over.

Here's a link to the latest EA/Take-Two details:

I would imagine everyone except Brinkman would be let go, assuming BB and EA left on good terms.

If it happens (even if it doesn't), I'm sure this isa tough time for 2K employees and their families. It's too bad and I wish them the best.

Just my two cents but I think it is just a matter of time before EA does buy Take Two. Mind you this does not mean I would be happy about it, I just think it is inevitable. Whether or not Take Two gets bought out or not I just want a quality baseball game to play.

Does EA own the high heat engine, or is it microsoft? I know of them bought the rights to the high heat engine. In any event, while it would be sad to see games like NHL, NBA, and college hoops stop being made, the MLB series is one that I wouldn't be too unhappy about if 2k stopped making it. They have released year after year of sub par games at this point. I don't think EA could do much worse.

Gobble munch munch belch, like always. Then it's a matter of waiting to see what the product that comes out the other end, looks and plays like.

I would guess if EA bought Take Two, they may keep the MLB 2k engine and go from there. They are look at a good return on investment, so the execs probably will use the existing engines since EA has not developed a "next gen" baseball engiine. The other option is to use their existing MVP engine and update it. I am sure there will be a baseball game next year by someone other than Sony.

Well if this is done I hope EA keeps the basketball and football engines.

For baseball video game fans, best case scenario, EA buys them and leverages the MLB license from the buy out to ressurect the MVP series....MVP 05 is still a better game even by todays standards than the 2K series has ever been. Could you imagine a next gen version of MVP? Very good for gamers.

                      IMO that's what 2K9 will/would be.

i'd have to think basketball would be a given. Live is in the middle of a multi-year revamp while 2K is among the best basketball games ever right now.

with Madden i'm guessing egos get in the way. as good as the engine for APF was, Tiburon is going to point to sales.

baseball should be interesting. MVP Major League Baseball 2k9 anyone?

One cool thing is it'll let the game take the colored ball system from MVP and implement it into the game. Do that with another year of polishing, hopefully no frame rate issues and further game play tweaking and I think you have a rival for The Show.

I'm really surprised Brinkman didn't add that to 2K8 considering how many people complained about reading pitches in 2K7.

if the pitch is in your hitter's eye, it is colored....yellow for sliders, red for fastball...white for changeups, etc.
