Why do batters run on foul pop outs??

Every time I hit a pop out in foul territory, the batter slams his bat to the ground than starts running to first. This is totally wrong, I understand line drive fouls but they shouldn't be running when they pop it right behind the catcher.

They just haven't mo-capped and added the required animations. Will probably be in 2K9, is my bet. Same thing with the IF guys who call to the OF's for the throw back in, after a HR is hit. There should be animation there where they hang their heads and kick the dirt or whatever.

What happens if the ball pops off the catcher's helmet and lands into fair territory?

Nothing, it is still a foul ball. Doesn't matter where the ball ends up if a position player touches the ball when it is in foul territory, it is a foul ball. Same thing applies if a position player touches the ball in fair territory and then it pops out into foul ground. That is a fair ball.

It's still a foul ball. This is why it doesn't make sense why they bother running.

I take it you havent seen a game at Wrigley? Balls can move over 25 feet in the air on a windy day.

That being said the animation is used accessively in this game. Doesnt bother me in the least though.

LOL...the more concerned question should be, why DONT runners run out easy ground outs!

I cant tell you how many times I cursed the screen to see my batter hit a routine grounder in the hole only to get thrown out at 1st because it appeared that they were jogging down to 1st base only to be thrown out by a step or 2!

...but then again Jose Reyes is on the cover so that could explain it

they dont run they jog. even when you hit a high pop fly to the outfield they jog. i dont see the big deal what really bugs me is the catcher can not back up the 1st baseman that quick. throw gets by the baseman you cant even advance to 2nd cause the cather has the ball. now thats dumb!
