This question is for the OS mods, maybe you can help?

With all of the slider threads created trying get the game to play as close to a true experience as possible with walks, longer pitch counts and not a hr fest. I thought, these guys that made the game really know baseball and should be pretty darn good at it. If that is the case then they would have to know of a great slider set to accomplish a sim game. Is there anyway we could have them release their version of sim sliders and maybe explain to what degree adjusting the sliders has on the game?

The problem I have is I live in Pittsburgh, so I like to use my dreadful pirates! Don't laugh! haha
When I used the sliders with them it's really hard to win but if i use a power house like Boston you can't lose.

    Any thoughts? Thank you.

Have you taken a look at the player ratings? I mean REALLY checked them out? Two examples:

Juan Pierre - Arm Strength rating: 65%. It's the same rating as Garrett Anderson. Meaning he throws darts. His arm should be 10% at most.

Carlos Delgado - HR Against LHP rating: 85%. Only 20% of his HR's lifetime have come off LHP. That rating should be 40% tops.

Between the batting and fielding ratings, it's apparent whoever programmed the game knows little about baseball. Personally, I'd say asking the 2K people is not the answer.

Totally agree. As I said before many times. We can tweak sliders up the wazzu, but until they properly fix the Player Ratings this game will always have problems & sure enough your post confirms this...

Here's another good one: Jason Giambi's fielding ratings are higher than Conor Jackson's! Guess it pays to play on the Big East teams when it comes to video game ratings, LOL.

Thanks guys. I never really looked at it like that before. I would like to hear their reaction to your concerns. I would think one of the OS guys could get that question asked and answered, don't you?

The whole general "three year average" rule they use needs to be tossed aside. It doesn't take into account a players age, their home stadium, injuries, etc. It's very generic, but I'm sure it's easy for them. It requires no updating of the actual programming, just the data feed.

CBS Sportsline does a great job with stat projections...maybe 2K could strike a deal with them.

The good news Joe is I've been testing ratings for a couple days now, and the one thing about this game that's always been great is that the ratings are extremely responsive. Lowering everyone's arm by 20-30% (and 80% for Pierre, Damon and some others) completely fixes that issue. And Giambi with fielding ratings where they belong -- rock bottom, in other words -- can barely hold on to throws from A-Rod and Jeter (okay, that rating I maybe lowered TOO much).

I also lowered Ortiz' fielding ratings and played a game against the Red Sox. Sure enough, I hit a ball to his right; he dove and the ball bounced off his glove. By the time he got up and flipped it to the P covering, my runner was safe. Before I lowered his ratings, he was playing first base ala Doug Mientkiewicz, which is what got me started on this project in the first place.

I understand your thought about the game developers. One would think they know the game inside and out. I'm just not sure that applies with this game. I get the feeling there's a lot of turnover at 2K (my own theory when it comes to the continual questions about this series). I would bet many of the people who programmed this game even last year are probably long gone.

Then I look at myself and how much time it takes to test even a few of these ratings out. I've spent many hours since I got the game just figuring out pitch speeds, and how the hitting is programmed in relation to contact and power ratings, and the new total control pitching interface. Given the time and creative constraints that go along with developing games, I'll bet nobody at 2K is ever given the time and freedom to take the game apart to that degree, in order to figure out how the game programming all works and fits together.

I agree that ratings are the problem.

Still going to defend NBA Live for it's push for more realistic ratings. People threw hate at EA for doing it but if the game play was fixed than those ratings would be great.

I look at games like Madden and it's laughable. The ratings are terrible. Guys rated as 99. Too many players being above 95.

MLB 2k8 (or just about any sports game for that matter) just has too many players rated highly. I would argue that every rating is too high for every single player.

I think Albert Pujols is a rated above a 90 in every hitting category. Think about what that really says to you as a gamer. He becomes almost unstoppable.

One thing about 2K games: they own EA in the area of ratings-effectiveness. I love FIFA 08, but there are only 2-3 ratings out of the 30 or so that make any real difference as far as how good the player is. And like Madden, as long as the player has SPEED, he's a superstar.

All of 2K's player ratings have a huge effect on how poorly or how well the player plays defensively and/or offensively. Their games really are a tweakers dream come true... which is why I don't get too upset when their games never play properly out of the box

So true on Speed in Madden.

I basically gave up on that game back in 2001 when playing a multi-user franchise.

My friend drafted one of the worst running backs in the game but he had a 99 overall speed. Guy went on to shatter rushing records and couldn't be touched.

This seems like it would be an easy fix. Is it possible for these changes to be made via a roster update?

It's very possible via roster updates; however, that'd require 2K sports to cater to their fan base for once which is something they've never done.

Nothing to do with 2K catering to fan their base. If you're talking about ratings fixes, no game developer releases updates to fix that. The ratings in sports games are what you get: that's the way the game was designed. If you want them changed, you do it yourself. And thankfully the editing options in 2K8 are extensive.
