I really wanted to like WSB, since it provides a much more "complete" baseball experience (bullpen warmups, manual dives, solid AI, realistic strikeouts, etc), but in the end I was willing to forego a few of these things and choose the game with the better pitcher/batter interface. It was a very hard decision. I actually returned and re-bought WSB twice because I was so on the fence, but the game that was more fun won out in the end.

What Spoils WSB for me (PS2 version)
For the past few weeks I have been putting MVP and WSB thtough it's paces and the main thing that prevents WSB from winning the crown is the batting model or more specifically, the "too quick" and choppy looking batting animation. To be honest, I can't believe that this isn't mentioned more by reviewers. Because the animation is too fast and looks to be missing some frames, you have to actually hold back a bit from swinging or you will be out in front of everything (even on the fastest pitch speeds). Also, the difference between pulling a ball and hitting to opposite field is almost impercievable becasue the difference between the two is a micro second. Thefore you get no sense of where you hit the ball untill you see it in the field. This is totally opposite in MVP, where the swing is fluid and the timing and ball contact is PERFECT. It's a shame, because everything else about WSB is great, but hitting is 50% of the game and it just ruins it for me. The fielding is challenging and probably the best I have ever seen in a bb game. The pitching sysytem is great, with the variable pitching enabled, even though MVP's provides more interaction. In short, MVP's hitting model is just so much more rewarding and "feels" so much more like really hitting a baseball in real life. The pitches coming in look the best of any video game to date, in thier speed and movement. In WSB, anything that's not a fastball, drops 3 feet as it crosses the plate.

Well, it's trade offs. When I first saw the swing animation I thought it was very stiff, but looking at the total package I just got used to it and it didn't bother me. I use the behind pitcher view when I'm in the field and that's a great view and lessons, for me, the stiff swing of the batter.
Yes, MVP looks pretty good, but I see so many complaints that people 1} can't hit homeruns and 2} can't strike out the CPU. If you can overcome those then you have a pretty good game on your hands. -

Re: What Spoils WSB for me (PS2 version)
stealing and walks are a wash IMO. both games will give you 2-3 walks per game if you are patient. Stealing is harder in MVP, but if you "adjust" for this in WSB, it becomes a non-issue. Funny how WSB didnt have bullpen warmups last year and nobody said "no bullpen = no baseball" last year.
The main problem with WSB is that the bat "feels" like a whiffle ball bat to me.Comment
