DEEP TO CENTER! WAY BACK! OUTTA HERE! -- The HR Feeling thread

Maybe this has been covered before, but considering how non-enthusiastic 2k feels about hitting a dinger, I'm curious as to what the OS community thinks which game -- past or present -- gives you a true HR feeling.

As of right now, MVP 2005 does it for me. The sound of the bat making contact with the ball -- you could feel hitting a homer run. The crowd goes wild, camera captures the fireworks shooting above the stadium. It legitimately captured the emotion, feel and pageantry of hitting one.

With 2k7 and 2k8, it didn't seem special to hit a HR. Hopefully, 2k9 will get some excitement back into video game baseball.

Well, when there are so many....

Jokes aside, I think it starts with control mechanics. A HR should feel right. Then sound...some HR's should explode off the bat, which leads to...camera work. There should be a visual difference between a 475ft blast and a 320ft squeaker. Then comes commentary. Big HR's (meaning monster shots and, more importantly, clutch/late inning HR's) should be treated with real enthusiasm. Then, finally, celebration. This brings us back to sound also. The crowd should be into it (particularly in close games of course), the player and teammates should be into it, etc. For example, The Show does a good job with it via cutscenes, but the crowd still isn't right all the time and sometimes they zoom in on the players face too much. A big HR is one of the most exciting things in baseball for most viewers, so it needs to be treated as such, IMO.

They need to get rid of the red arrow on the homeruns, because it's very anti-climatic with the red arrow showing it's going to be a homerun. I agree that MVP 05 had a great feel with the homeruns, but I haven't played that many video game baseball series. In the show it felt pretty good too.

^^^ yea, the red arrow was a bad idea. I think if the home run is a close one, there should be no indication whatsoever, so you're on the edge of the seat until the ball lands in the stands. Also, if you have ever been to a baseball game (im sure you have), the crowd either cheers or gasps (depending on the team), whenever a fly ball is hit far, even if it clearly not a home run, so that should be in the game as well.

An option to get rid of all visual distractions would a step in the right direction.. All neon lights used in fielding and the red home-run arrow should be put in the trashcan...

I agree MVP 05 had good home-runs! My pick for the best looking homer was 2K3, it looked and felt like you really cranked one! I would be happy if either MVP 05' or 2K3 style of home-runs were used...At any rate something has to be done to bring up the excitement level...

See folks, this is what I'm talking about! MVP 05, go to 1:56 for the home run.

Granted, it's a walk-off homer, so of course it's exciting, but even in 2k8, a walk off seemed like no biggie ...

When I"m at a game, I've always noticed the sound of the fans as a potential home run neared the wall.

(begins when ball is traveling over outfield)
              yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....... (ball clears wall) AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

              Make sense?

The sound everyone knows and it can be recaptured easily so I am not goin into that one. As long as the crowd and commentary go nuts I am good. The camera angle is what needs to be dealt with. I for one LOVE the camera in the show where you jack one and it kinda has a 3rd person camera where it shows the player lookin and following the ball as it goes out of the yard. I fela this outs you "over the shoulder" of the player and gives you a sense that you are there.

The camera angle for no-doubters in both 2k8 and 08' The Show put me to sleep!
I want to watch the ball not the left fielder picking his butt!

The replay shows the flight of the ball and that's what should be seen in real time...

Can you imagine watching some of Mickey Mantle's or Mark McGwire's 500 ft. blasts and all they showed was the grass growing?

                  Please show some drama!

Minus that annoying female screaming ... yes please.

I just LOVE the cell phone videos from games on YouTube ... feels so much more alive than TV.

Gotta have the pause crowd too for the not so sure homers like this ...

On a walk off homer, I expect to hear the excitement. Like maybe hearing John Sterling go "The pitch is swung on, HIT IN THE AIR TO DEEP CENTER FIELD, ELLSBURY GOING BACK, STILL BACK, ON THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, LOOKING UP...C YA!!!!!!!! A WALK OFF HOME RUN FROM ALEX RODRIGUEZ! IT'S AN A-BOMB, FROM A-ROD! BALLGAME OVER, YANKEES WIN, THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!!!!!!"

Then I would like to hear the after stadium sounds, like New York, New York blasting through the stadium.
