2k7 underated?
I personally think so, I finally got the game about 2 weeks ago and after reading through this forum I wasn't too excited to get it. But after playing it IMO this game, it is a very solid game. It may have its bugs, like fielding which is do able, but tough, but overall the presentation and graphics of the game are top notch. I have been a baseball game lifer back to editing baseball stars on the nes, and recently mvp 05 for the pc, but this game to me is a better game than mvp or any other baseball game I have ever played. I am playing it on a 67 inch samsung running at 1080, and just so you guys don't bash me about my baseball knowledge, I was drafted twice by the San Francisco Giants in '98 and '99. So I guess my question is, what is everyone main issues with 2k7. 2k8 I agree from the demo I played a different feel and game.Tags: None -
Re: 2k7 underated?
I'm still a big stickler with 30 FPS, even if steady. That, and no uber-decent skill to making contact with the ball was a big let down for me.
I think all of that, combined with me playing pre-patch (camera sucked) and my HDTV with lag while pitching and hitting, and no self-shadowing on PS3 (graphics whore over here) combines the reasons for me. I could live with the pre-determined diving catches and opposite field home runs on inside pitches, but I was looking for solidity in other areas.
Many people didn't see it as a terrible game, though. They actually saw it as a Godsend, a complete turnaround from Kush's earlier attempt, and the first step to a three year plan that would ultimately drive us to a next-gen version of what MVP would have been. It was all there, even the signature style animations and half-decent online play.
Of course, there were still "rocket arms" (long story), terrible AI configured lineups, and a massive strike zone... but the game was in fact playable. Granted, I wasn't too impressed with the framerate (again, though steady) and devotion to the PS3 version in general, but it was all tolerable. I think people liked the path that it was going, though it wasn't exactly where it needed to be just yet.
2K8 destroyed everything that made 2K7 that one step to the three year plan, and it makes many people think that if we had known this was going to happen all along, it would have been better if 2K7 went a different direction, like completely scrapping everything that had been done and starting over.
I wouldn't say that 2K7 was underrated, but The Show starting getting people's attention at that time too, you must understand. It seemed to be a truly competitive market, but 2K8 ruined any kind of hope for that.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60 -
Re: 2k7 underated?
I think it was a very fun game, but it was the competition's attention to detail that overshadowed it. I agree with what Blzers take on it. I would also add weak hit variety, some poor stat-tracking bugs, repetative commentary, etc. is what cause many to view it as sub-par (aside from the bugs...which were pretty bad).
Again, keep in mind this is also because the competition did those things much better and captured the overall "feel" of the game better. Also, being the only third party game in town brings about some bitterness in some cases, but more importantly, higher expectations.
It was a fun game and a step in the right direction. I think the excessive (and at times debilitating) bugs ultimately did it in for most people when all is said and done. If you were willing to put in the preventative maintenance, so to speak, then it could be an enjoyable enough game for sure.Comment

Re: 2k7 underated?
2K7 was a great game. My main complaints would be that it was too focused on home runs, since almost all the runs were scored with homers. Also, the AI fielding could be really annoying as they would constantly scale the wall and rob homers from you.
Personally, I like 2K8 better. With the right difficulty sliders, 2K8 plays a fairly satisfying game of baseball for the most part. Plus I like the fielding and pitching controls better in 2K8 (controls seemed awkward at first, but after a few games I really liked the new approach), and the swingstick is improved. It's nice to have the option to pull the ball or hit to the opposite field, which wasn't an option in with 2K7's version of the swingstick. 2K7's swingstick was easier, but once you get the hang of 2K8's hitting, it gives you more control and it's not as random as 2K7's hitting was. Plus, you can still use 2K7's swingstick in 2K8 if you change the control settings, and the older pitching/fielding controls if you want those too.
The overall graphics were better in 2K7, but 2K8 does have nicer animations, and while the framerate was terrible initially, it is tolerable after the patch.
I liked both games, but if I had to choose one over the other, I'd take 2K8 mainly because the controls give you much more control over the game. For instance, I don't like fielding controls where all you do is push a button and you have no control over the power or accuracy of the throw. 2K8 gives you control over both and makes the game much less random.
However, if you want to play mainly online, DO NOT buy 2K8 as it's so much more laggy than 2K7. For online play, 2K7 is the way to go. But for offline franchise mode, 2K8 would be my choice.Last edited by jeffy777; 01-14-2009, 01:51 PM.Comment

Re: 2k7 underated?
Theres really only 2 things that bothered me in 2k8, and that was the lack of A.I stolen bases(except for Carlos Gomez, he steals on me ALL the time,I think I'll edit other players running attributes to his, to see if they will steal as much), and how sometimes your fielders will go "brain dead" and just let a ball go right between there legs or not pick up the ball that is right infront of them(this mainly happens when a ball is sitting near an outfield wall...It doesn't happen a whole lot, but it's still annoying and usually very costly for your team!)Comment

Re: 2k7 underated?
Blzer, I concur. I loved 2K7 and was psyched for 2K8 until I popped in the Xbox and man was I disappointed from the graphics to the lag so I took that JUNK back and traded it in. I played the MLB The Show 08 and wasn't too impressed with PS2 graphics for a PS3 game. I am not a loyal fan of 2K sports anymore since I was ripped-off last year, so this year if MLB The Show 09 have graphics like/better than 2K7 and decent gameplay, see ya Xbox 360.Coming is my style, but I have to go.Comment

Re: 2k7 underated?
The main thing with 2k7 is a patch came WAY too late, IIRC. Wasn't it a good 4-5 months after the game came out?PSN: VoicesWrestling

Re: 2k7 underated?
Before I traded in my 360 this was the game I was playing and it really wasn't bad at all. I had it tweaked (and patched) to where it was playing a really good game of baseball. I was getting realistic pitch counts/walks/k's/hits/errors. Graphically it was beautiful. If I could combine some things from 2K8 and 2K7 you'd have a pretty darn good game."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. Re: 2k7 underated?
I still play MLB 2k7 and will play it again for my baseball fix if 2k9 isn't good.
I'm not a graphics whore, but damn does the game look great on my 46" HDTV. Post patch, it's a good baseball game... not perfect by any means, but alot of fun.
When I loaded up 2k8 last year, the first thing that jumped out at me was how the graphics took a major hit.. and that's not something I usually notice.Comment

If you think that this is unimportant...ask Mariano Rivera if it makes a difference. Its teh difference from him being a mediocre starter to a HOF closer
btw...being drafted doesnt mean all that much as far as knowledge...it just means you were a good athlete 10 years ago.Comment

Re: 2k7 underated?
for me my biggest problem with 2K7 was the hitting system. I could not aim my swing. I only could aim where i wanted the ball to go. The example i give to show that it lacks realism is that you hit a 92mph cutter the same as a 92mph 4FB and a 92mph 2seamer. What determines if you make solid contact vs being jammed? Its not the users input. The timing is the same for all...its where you place the bat that makes the difference.
