Re: 2k9 Graphics comparison to 2k7

It is an unfair comparison on some level; for a few reasons.

MLB 2K7 runs at 30fps and includes, in my opinion, a little more detail in the texture work. The lighting is "off" however. The Kenny Roger's screen is super saturated, and white colors "bloom" unrealistically. MLB 2K8 did the same thing.

MLB 2K8 may not have run smoothly, but the "base" animations are smoother than 2K7's. Leading off a base, for example. It's smooth in 2K8, a herky-jerky mess in 2K7. Last year's title aslo included many more throwing animations.

MLB 2K9 appears to have better player models, for starters. And, if it runs at a smooth 60fps and Visual Concepts tightened up the lighting (it was awfully dark at times in 2K8), the game will look much better in motion.

MLB 2K7 may always look better in stills. But, something tells me 2K9 will be the prettier game in motion.

Umm, I think the thread is titled Graphic comparison.

Re: 2k9 Graphics comparison to 2k7

There are 3 things in particular that will be "tell tell" signs:
        • Grass & dirt texture (grass can't be flat)
        • Player models
        • Framerate when the ball is in play...ie fielding
I want the jerseys to sway in the wind again....even The Show hasn't matched that yet.
The grass is the equivalent to the court's light reflection of basketball games, they need to look like real grass
I don't want a jerky double play or a hitch in my throw from left field to home plate

Give me this and we will have a winner

Re: 2k9 Graphics comparison to 2k7

At the moment, I will say that the 2K9 player models will be the best on any console game to date, The Show has blocky player models.

Aside from framrate, we play the game in the stadium, and a tv style presentation with realistic stadium renderings will give us the immersion that the game of baseball requires

Even the fact that 2K has historically shown the outside of the stadiums before game time has given them a leg up on the competition. Hopefully that is back this year as well.

Re: 2k9 Graphics comparison to 2k7

I just looked at the features list that is on another thread in here and noticed that an upgrade to the lighting has been done to this years game, I think that this will truely be an underated aspect of the game that most people have not taken into consideration yet.

I say this b/c, I've played the demo of MLB 09 The Show, and the lighting in that game drastically gave the impression of improved graphics.
If done with enough attention to detail, this could have a huge effect on the game. The key is "shadow placement" within the ball park at various times during the game.

Re: 2k9 Graphics comparison to 2k7

I tweaked a few pictures of 2K9, to try and illustrate my point.

I agree the detail in 2K9's pictures appear to be "washed out." But that could just be the way they were captured. The only thing I did for each was to slightly increase the contrast effects (contrast/gamma). No other touches were needed.

For those of us with nice sets (I have my HDTV set to high contrast), the game will probably look a little more like this. I think it looks stunning.

Up close graphics are pointless. Nobody has the option to play these games at such close levels, so why do we concern ourselves with such things? In reality, to do without nailing the seams in a jersey to perfection is a payoff because it's less the game has to process, making the framerate less of a challenge.

To me, the player models and the animations the do are far more important than whether or not Josh Beckett looks like Josh Beckett. It just doesn't matter. In fact, I think debating such things proves that people are less concerned with gameplay and more concerned with whether or not the graphics gives them a woody.

Up close graphics do matter.... Here's quick helmet shot from The Show 09 Demo I took. If that doesn't look real, then I need glasses

I'm not a stickler for player face renderings as long as they don't look wierd and they are distinguishable, which based on the pics so far, the player models themselves along with the faces I believe will be an upgrade over previous games.

Based on the new batter camera angle, in game real time cutscenes, and new animations, I believe we will not be dissapointed.

I think that the stadium and field textures will be significant, and more so than anything that will give this game a postive review will be the fluidity of the framerate which I'm sure VC is working vigorously on as we speak before it goes "Gold".

Does anyone think that the PS3 version of the game will be very similar to the 360 version with regard to framerate and visuals?

They only matter in instant replays that you look at. Otherwise, 98% of the time you're playing at a view that allows you to play the game wisely.

Otherwise these graphics points will be moot without good gameplay.

No I don't, but if you want to get a pretty good idea of what/how a game looks graphically, close still screens are usually a good indicator
