Why Inside Edge? Pitch F/X instead!

Edit: Oops, misspelled "edge"! Hate that....

Talking about Inside Edge in the Conference call thread, and I had this idea......

I have to admit I'm not sure why they even use it (IE). Last year, I downloaded all the Major League Pitch F/X data and analyzed it to help make sliders. All the info that IE has is also there in the Pitch F/X, maybe better even.

And not only is it a wealth of pitcher and batter tendencies, it's updated every day. Every day.

So that leads me to this. First, 2K should ditch the IE, there's nothing there that they can't get for free from the data that MLB provides.

Second, and this is the big one.....since Pitch F/X is updated daily, they could use it to constantly update each player's ratings/tendencies throughout the season. Incorporated into the "Living Rosters" this would make the ultimate in weekly updates IMO. Batters would change from week to week as they get hot or slump. Pitchers would have accurate MPH on their pitches and the way they pitch both to certain batters and in certain situations.

I'll be the first to admit that this would be a daunting task. After wading thru the mountain of data that Pitch F/X was last year, I have no desire to do it again this year for sliders (I'm just going to use last years data, I'm sure the Major Leagues haven't changed that much). But if 2K was to truly utilize this data and use it correctly, it could be used to help make the most realistic baseball game ever.

How do I patent this idea?

Yes. This is a great idea, though obviously it'd work best for hitters. Hit F/X is coming soon, so 2K should also implement that (maybe in a couple of seasons when the system is ironed out).

It would work well for pitchers as well. Not only can it show how a pitcher pitches in certain situations and to certain batters, but it would allow the game maker to create incredibly accurate pitches.

Pitch F/X data shows not only the MPH of the pitches, but it also shows how much break they have on their pitches. You would be able to accurately set the break of a curveball/slider, etc....and calculate how often they throw a pitch that doesn't break as well, if the break lessens as they tire and so forth. It really is a bonanza of information that's there for free and updated every day. A baseball video game not using this really is a surprise, but then I guess it's not all that well known yet.

The only thing I really want is progressive IE reports in franchise.

Tried to make this post as short as possible without explaining it, I'm guessing it made enough sense.

My bad. I meant "obviously it'd work best for pitchers", which is why I went on and talked about Hit/fx, which would be the alternative for hitters.

Here's a great example of how pitch/fx could be incorporated:

Tom Glavine will bring his nibbling technique back for another season. He leads the league in plate avoidance.

Not sure if you'd just program the tendencies onto the pitcher (I'm guessing that's what's done with Inside Edge), or create ratings such as FAT, OUT, or IN (see article).

Isn't that pretty much what NBA Live does?

That's pretty good! And exactly what I'm talking about. The detail provided by FX would be much more life-like than IE.

More detailed, free, and updated daily. Are you paying attention 2K?
