Have game developers gotten lazy?
These are sports games, and as sports games should be, competition is good. It's almost like 2k started resting on t heir laurels a bit and is like oh **** here, the show is really good and is now trying to play catch up. This is a problem with society as a whole imo because these developers cant be that stupid where they don't know what us as gamers want. I like the presentation in this game a lot and it seems like 2k has woken up in a lot of regards but at the same time I'm still not buying this game because it's an unfinished product at this point. Me personally i miss hte days when there were 5 or 6 games to choose from and the games were better back then. IT seems like competition is heating up again and these companies are competing for our dollar beause of the economy or whatever, but it's still not good enough. I think people had too much money and 2k could get away with releasing crap for years and people were buying it. There was very little progression in these games at all. Are people starting to get sick of it and that's the only reason we are seeing 2k trying to make changes here?Last edited by kGinGreen; 03-01-2009, 04:00 PM.Tags: None -
Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
The way I see it is they want to spend the minimal amount of money on making the game so they try to cut corners as much as possible. So instead of re-writing code from the ground up, which would take alot of resources, time, & money, they just try to rework old code that is who knows how old, probably since 2K3... From what I read, it takes alot of money now to make games with their upgraded graphics so I can see how the company would say, hey, this isnt our bread & butter of this company so here is a budget for MLB 2K & see what you can do.
I could be wrong but I work in an engineering dept of a manufacturing company & thats the way things go."In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened." - Vin Scully

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
EA's FIFA and NHL franchises are great, so I'd say no to your question. IMO, the issue is 2K and what appears to be their lack of finances = lack of polished games. And it seems VC is responsible for part of this. They're stripping down and ripping everything out of their games: APF 2K8, NHL 2K9 and now this game. Very weird stuff.Comment

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
So what you are saing is 2k is downsizing even moreso? Isn't that a problem though when they and EA are the only 2 sports game developers left along with Sony's in house stuff? I agree with you that EA has really upped the anti the last year and has really restructured their games in a positive sense. The Show is also beautiful. But is this it? What happens when there is no more competition? EA rules the world? I've been saying this for a while but I think 2k is in trouble as a company. I tend to think all th ese companies are going to be consolidated into one entity ultimately. Like Gamestop has kind of become for video game retailing. Seems to me like there might be mergers in the future.Last edited by kGinGreen; 03-01-2009, 04:18 PM.Comment

The reason for NHL and MLB are easy. new developers had to make their first installment of the game in under a year. They didn't have the luxury of being familiar with everything. Its not like they been working on the game for 3 years or something.
I will be on the fans side in saying that the game does need some tweak and i hope they can be addressed. I am sure in many ways, they had to rush some things. Its just how sports games work.
Like i said in other posts, i know alot of people come tomorrow are going to tell who we need to tell that there is area's of this game that need tweaking.Comment

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
outside of graphics what was really good about 2K7? That game was either a home run or a single. At least in my experience. Hit variety if i remember clearly was not good.Comment

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
With the right sliders, I get all kinds of various hits in 2K7: bloop singles, doubles off the wall, gappers that can be tipples if the guy has speed, grounders that just barely get by a diving infielder, etc.Comment

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
So why is a game like Madden which is a huge cash cow so poor? . Everything on that game on the field is horrible? They have the finances to make a great game? Fifa is decent, but that game has ******** AI as well. I did enjoy my time on Fifa, but there is definately a few things that enjoyed me from really really liking the game.

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
2K paid for the exclusive (third-party) MLB license years ago and assumed they were riding a cash train like Madden's (true) exclusive NFL deal. Wonder if that deal is worth it now they're playing second fiddle to a series on a platform with a smaller install base.Comment

Re: Have game developers gotten lazy?
IMO developers are far from lazy.. The problem is short development cycles & the pressure of trying to make a game fell fresher that the last game developed...Comment
