Re: IE AI Hitting maybe "FLAWED" but man the IE "Pitching" is ON the money...
The Inside Edge feature has monster potential, but being able to paint the corners with Derrick Turnbow as easily as I can paint the corners with Chris Carpenter is unacceptable. I don't mind the 2-step for pick up and play, but with the 3-step pitching they should implement a dice roll based on the pitcher's individual pitch rating (fastball, curveball, changeup, etc.) and his accuracy rating to determine where the ball will end up. If and when they fix the AI batting issues, the combination of the two could lead to a great pitcher/batter implementation.
If someone has come up with a slider set that makes 3-step more difficult, please point me to it.
I think it accomplishes the same thing, but forces the user to make difficult choices. If they want to nibble on the corners, they know that 2/3 of their circle is outside of the zone and they will likely (2/3 of the time) throw a ball. If they move it in, then now they have a chance of leaving something fat over the plate. It would make pitching with wild pitchers very difficult to do. I gues it's just when you get randomness, I feel you take control from the user...though essentially you are coming to the same conclusion.
The only thing I would then add is that as a game goes on, the circle could then begin to grow or shrink depending on how well you are doing that day. Nothing to drastic, but enough to feel that your pitcher is on that day or just doesn't have it.Last edited by Trevytrev11; 03-05-2009, 05:57 PM.Comment

I think instead of a dice roll, the Turnbow's should just have a bigger circle of accuracy to begin with. A perfect pitch will fall somewhere in that circle, but the circle may be the size of a beach ball for some guys and the size of a grapefruit for others.

But once you get the timing down, the result becomes a function of your timing instead of the players ratings...something has to be done to seperate a control cuy from a wild guy. On his best day, Barry Zito cannot locate pitches like Greg Maddux on his worst day.
Being perfect with Zito compared to Maddux should have different results over the course of a game. When all is said and done with perfect execution on every pitch, Maddux should hit his spot much more often than Zito does.Comment

It drives me nuts when I'm playing the Show and I hit the line on the meter only to have my pitch drift 6 inches right over the middle of the plate or have it drift 6 inches outside. On the flipside, I have pinpoint accuracy with every pitcher in 2k9.
I like the idea you have above, but a system like that wouldn't be able to be implemented until 2k10. I guess I would like to see 2k tweak the pitching system to make it more difficult. They don't have to change the 2-step pitching, but tweak the 3-step system to give us more realistic results and a greater challenge. I think the vices are already in place for them to do this.
Step 1 - You load up the pitch with the first gesture (effectiveness/speed).
Step 2 - Perform the second part of the gesture (effectiveness/speed/accuracy)
Step 3 - Time the release (accuracy)
At this point, there needs to be more emphasis on a pitchers individual pitch ratings, their overall accuracy rating, and their composure rating. And not just in high pressure situations, but all situations. But here is a high pressure situation.
Cards lead 4-2, bases loaded, 1 out, bottom of the 7th. Joel Piniero pitching to Ryan Howard, 3 balls 1 strike. His composure probably isn't great and he has pitch ratings as follows (Fastball (78), Curveball (71), Slider (67), Changeup (56)) [I just made these ratings up to describe the system]. In real life, Piniero is probably going to throw him a fastball. In a video game the user should be thinking the same thing. I have the best chance of throwing a fastball for a strike, but they choose to throw a changeup even though it's his worst pitch. The user does everything perfect but tries to nibble the corner. Ball 4, walks in a run. A fastball would have had higher percentage of hitting the corner due to perfect input and higher ratings.
If it was Chris Carpenter, his composure would have been higher, his accuracy would be higher, and with perfect input he throws a slider (probably rated in the 70's) and gets Howard 3 & 2.
I'm not sure there is a happy medium here, but it would be fun to tinker with. As I said before, if there are sliders out there to make 3-step pitching harder, point me to them!!
P.S. They should get rid of the "shaking cursor" when composure gets low and go by ratings instead. They could show your composure meter on the fritz or something.Comment

I wanna try to keep this thread going as I have seen many talking about this as a way to generate pitch count. People this is working very well, not only in getting user pitch count up some, but in getting the AI to take strikes, swing @ questionable strikes & actually take strikes also..Comment

Guys im not trying to start a fight but the thread is about the pitching "being on the money".
If they make it too hard to pitch we will have endless threads about "how hard the pitching has become".
The game has to be for everyone.
Remember "The Show" still uses one button pitching and hitting thats been in baseball games for 10yrs, no one ever complains about that?
Btw..I LOVE this game, problems and all.Comment

Re: IE AI Hitting maybe "FLAWED" but man the IE "Pitching" is ON the money...
Just got the game and think so far it's a lot of fun. Got to agree with the AI Pitching. If you just hack at the ball (like me), your gonna K a lot. The CPU does a good job changing locations and you got to sit back and wait for your pitch.
So far so good with this game.Comment

Just wanted to continue to let the community know that if your having some trouble pitching (outside of what mechanic to use 2 or 3 step) give the IE Feature while your pitching a chance.
I can't stress how well it' done this year. Personally if it wasn't for this feature I might of already been done with this game. I've always hated IE feature because it was never implemented correctly on both ends (Offense & Pitching)
Pitching for me is much more fun & rewarding due to using it to scout the batter during his ABComment
