    Player Progression Issue?

I saw this in Franchise and wanted to pass this along to see if anyone else has anything to say about it:

I'm controlling the Nationals and acquired Ian Snell from the Pirates at the trade deadline. He goes .500 (win-loss) the rest of the season but ends the year with a losing record (6-13). At the end of the year, his ratings stay static and don't progress or regress.

However, next year, he goes 16-5, with improved ERA, IP, strikeouts and complete games...but his ratings regress by two points.

I had the same problem with Roy Halladay after he won the 2010 AL Cy Young in my Blue Jays franchise. He finishes the season 20-8 with a 3.10 ERA. The previous year, he's 9-14 with a 4.10 (approximate) ERA. His performance hugely improves, yet he regresses by 2 points AFTER he wins the Cy.

Now, I know that other factors such as age may play into this, but has anyone else noticed that the "player progression by performance" system isn't all it's cracked up to be? It seems to work with some players but fails with others.

    Re: Player Progression Issue?

The bigger problem is Ian Snell winning the Cy Young!

Well, by this point in his career, he would be 29, so he should not be seeing any increases in his abilities anymore. Losing two points might be a little high, but losing 10 points by the time he is 34 would seem pretty accurate.

What if he declines 2-3-4-5-6 over the next five years? Losing 20 points is steep, but I wuld bet you that Ian Snell is not pitching in the majors in five years.

I'm just rembling on about this one case. I have no real idea about how well player progression works in 2K9 at all. But it doesn't seem like this case is really bad. I'd fire the GM that brought Ian Snell on board thinking the guy was going to be a stud.

Snell didn't win the Cy, Halladay did. I used the Halladay reference as another example of the strange regressions that happen. Snell did win 16 games, though (as said above).

I know the dev's talked about it, but I don't recall what they said...Is it supposed to be based on performance?

I have no problem with a guy having a bad year and going up or a guy having a great year and going down? Many players have off years after a good year now and then and at the same many guys work harder after a dissapointing year and come back stronger.

I how much better can a guy like A-Rod or Pujols get after another solid year? Eventually they peak and then either hold steady or digress.

I like the ups and downs because it makes everything not so "exepcted."

Now if a guys power drops from 95 to 55, that would seem very unrealistic, but if it drops from 95 to 92, I have no problem with that.

There are the Barry Zito's of the world that just fall apart for one reason or another after several solid seasons and then there are the Cliff Lee's who are close to getting sent back down to the minors and come back and win a CY Young.

Age also has a factor into progression, i am 99% sure, just dont see Halladay at age 35 ( 2010) to get a boost. I am sure if he did worse that season, he would regress a lot more than just 2 points. be happy

It is based on performance, but at the same time, regression due to age is absolutely a driving factor as well.

It's a new system, one that will surely need some tweaks here and there. If you guys could continue to chronicle what you're seeing, it will certainly help us out with the feature moving forward.

Sorry, bad reading comprehension on my part. but as the previous guy pointed out, Halladay is even older. Cy Young or not, he needs to be regressing at this point in his career.

I'd say these are examples of the game getting it right.
