Re: Some Post-Patch Info about AI Aggression

Guffers hit the nail on the head. I initially though the AI aggressiveness wasn't that improved, until I realized my pitching motions weren't sharp.

The computer will hold off when the motion is nailed. Otherwise, it treats a pitch as "poorly" thrown and will tee off.

Before each series I would do this and jot them down in a small notebook.

At bat player A. Ok notes says, do NOT throw a 1st pitch FB, weak on the SL with 2 strikes, etc.

I wish this was part of the in game menu. Right on the Dpad then LT/RT to go through all those screens would be nice.

Interesting, I might have to adjust the sliders to see if it has any differences.

SoxFan, 2K Sports needs to hire you as a tester/quality control/head gameplay researcher. I'm willing to bet that no one over there in Novato did as much in-depth work with the game as you did.

Unfortunately, you've probably lost your job, your wife or girlfriend and everyone you're close to because of it, but take comfort in that we, the OS community appreciate it! Kudos.

Oh man I was so frustrated last night watching the AI score hit after hit on balls outside the zone. Then as I finally wised up and began to get my motions down I realised that this game actually has quite a bit going for it. The pressure involved in not flubbing your pitching motion against a great hitter is immense. I'm also finding the PS3 sticks a little tricky, I would of happily bought the 360 version but I'm stuck out here in a PAL territory with no region free release.

You guys can colour me very suprised with this game right now. It was so astonishingly bad out of the box that I thought nothing could save it. But now I'm seeing some depth that I had no idea was there. The series still has a long way to go but it has heart and looks like it will be competing with the Show in my PS3 this year. I'm really looking forward to perfecting my pitching and digging into a franchise. Good times!

To Guffers and others, about throwing "tough" gesture pitches to great hitters... I'm afraid to!

There's a real fear to throwing a hanger to a guy like Pujols, because you know the CPU will swing and hit it hard if YOU mess up. It's intense... it's also a great representation of the sport.

Yes, we do. And if that is the case, I think we'd all be happy to chip in for beer and hookers.
It's on me. I shook his hand too hard. It was a hard ... kind of a slap-shake.

Re: Some Post-Patch Info about AI Aggression

lol...thanks guys. It was really no big deal and only a very preliminary test. It was just to get a general idea of the difference in patience at the various ratings.

My wife is still here, my son was asleep when I did it, and I work from home anyway (which is EVERYTHING it's cracked up to be), so I'm doing fine...lol (though my dogs seemed to feel neglected...lol).

Seriously though, I appreciate the responses. One thing I'm looking at is the IE influence slider. I'm wondering if reducing it would allow players to play more consistently and directly off of their base ratings. I've not really noticed much difference (if any) with it reduced halfway, so I may need to pull it down 100% to see if eliminating it completely does anything significant. This is more my curiousity than personal usefulness...lol...but it might help the people who don't appreciate the variance based on the pitch count/pitch type tendencies of each player.

Personally, I'm a bit happier now that I've got the ratings figured out better, but that slider might be a difference maker for those still very unhappy with the AI Aggression.

One other thing I'm seeing (no formal tests though) is that hitters will be more apt to lay off pitches in a hot or neutral zone vs a cold zone. You can make much better use of this post-patch in setting up hitters now that they'll actually take some pitches.

If you get ahead, you can have good success getting hitters to chase a pitch in their cold zone (if they have one) outside the strike zone . Those hitters that have these "chase" zones are more apt to flail for strike three than a better hitter who doesn't have one. It can make handling low to mid-tier hitters a bit different than a better hitter, which is good.

My main gripe with this however, is I stand by my original assessment for hot/cold. Hitters are too tied to them. A pitch to a chase zone will almost always (especially if you are nailing your gestures) swing and miss badly. These should be more a tendency based evolution than a locked down ultimate truth about the hitter...lol. It's mostly fine for relatively even counts, but if you're way ahead or behind, the zones become virtual certainties. It's something they'll defininitely want to tweak next year IMO.

Also breaking pitches are still much too hard for AI batter. They flail away at them like idiots when they're behind. Foul balls are still too infrequent as well. Still the overall improvement can lead to a better pitcher/batter confrontation which is the point. I don't think anyone realistically expected the patch to suddenly overhauls everything the game fell short in. It's a solid enough improvement, just takes a bit of work is all.

Just to clear up some terminology for me... Also, I'm on PC...

What are you guys talking about with pitchers motions and gestures?

Is that the way you move the right analog stick to throw your pitch?

Sounds like the patch is doing good things.

I just installed it, now to play after bit.

Well, I bumped up the difficulty to Legend and promptly got my *** rocked 8-0 by the Texans in my fantasy draft Franchise.

Their pitcher was C.C. Sabathia and mine was... Kyle Kendrick. Rotation said Ben Sheets, but apparently with Linsecum (sp?...) getting tagged with a come-backer and being out 6-8 weeks (broken elbow) changed things up a bit.

All was well until the 4th, 5th and 6th innings where they scored 1, 2 and 3 runs. Gave up another two in the 8th. I had a total of 4 hits, they had 19.

I couldn't get anything on a pitch. They were all soft groundballs or easy fly's.

I think I need to turn down the pitch speed as holy crap it was coming fast.

No homers, but did give up two triples in the game and a couple of doubles.

JD Drew (my right fielder) managed to go back for a 2-out fly and then misjudge it - which gave them two of their runs when it should have ended the inning...

                              All-in-all, a brutal game...

Maybe we could start an opening day roster by adjusting all of the walk ratings for every player.
