    Re: Fielding an abomination

Man sometimes when a pop up is hit to the outfield my fielder would just stand in the circle not put his glove up and the ball would roll all the way to the wall

That sums it up perfectly. I really want this game to be a fun and lasting experience but I just end up annoyed after more than a few days of playing it. 2K needs to make sure that fundamentals like fielding and the pitcher/batter duel are tight and then the game will really rise in a lot of people's estimation. I would not care if they left presentation alone for a couple of years (aside from some small fixes) if they could really tighten up the core of the game.

Its just so frustrating because last year I felt that it played a solid game of baseball with some cool new controls but the presentation (frame rate) was atrocious. Now we have a silky smooth frame rate, amazing new announcers and a fantastic TV broadcast presentation but the actual game itself has digressed. Sigh.

        Re: Fielding an abomination

Sometimes I think fielding is scripted in this game. Forget the dozens of times when the ball just goes over my outfielder's head when he's in position to catch the ball (as mentioned a few posts earlier).

The other night I'm playing against the Yankees, there are two outs, and they have the bases loaded. One thing I've realized in this game is that it pays to play your OFs shallow because the AI loves to drop bloopers in right in front of you (which is one reason why pitchers are some of the best hitters in the game because you can't adjust your defense when pitchers are batting so they just bloop them in).

Anyway, I get the Yankee batter to hit an easy, soft line drive three steps to the right (closer to the foul line) of my left fielder. Easy catch, right?

I get control of the fielder with PLENTY of time and direct him to his right. But he won't move. Actually, he's moving like crazy with his legs pumping but he's hitting an invisible wall that keeps him out of range until the ball hits the round. He was close enough that when the invisible wall disappeared (exactly when the ball hit the ground) he was able to grab it and limit the damage.

The AI had decided that the Yanks were going to score. Period. And they did.

A main gripe of mine is that when I throw to third or home on a tag play, 90% of the time my fielder will refuse to tag the guy out.

Plus I get countless times where my outfielders are right over and ball, do the glove animation then completely not come close to the ball and it's also an inside homer that kills my pitcher's ERA.

Or and half the time, it won't let me adjust my fielders to move shallow and such, so pitchers also get hits because my outfielders are deep or normal.

Please.. yea, you had A sequence in which you fouled off 7 straight pitches. Things like that don't happen nearly enough as they should in a MLB simulation. If things like that did happen at a decent rate, the total pitch counts for a game wouldn't usually be below 90 or 100.

I'm sooo tired of standing right under the ball when a fly ball is hit to the outfield and the fielder would just stand there and the ball would bounce off his shoulder it's so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!

Had that happen in the 8th inning of World Series game three the other night and here's the bad part: I was pitching a perfect game w/Roy Oswalt against the Yankees. In one play I lost the perfect game, the no-hitter, and the shut out as this resulted in an inside the park HR.

To go that deep into a game pitching perfectly and then have it blown on a 'glitch' was a little on the frustrating side. If I owned a cat, I would have kicked it.

                  Re: Fielding an abomination

Yeah I lost a game 9-8 in the 9th the other day because of this. I hadn't seen any fielding gaffes in almost a week and then two came in one inning to let in the tying and winning runs. Insanely frustrating. I've found that the best strategy with the fielding in this game is to get your player to the marker as quickly as you can and then let go of the sticks ASAP. Usually the CPU takes over and makes the catch. If you fiddle with the sticks too much then the player will usually delay going into the catch causing that moronic 'slowly raising hands whilst ball bounces off head, shoulder arm etc' animation.

The insane thing is I've had far more fun with this game than the Show in the last week or two. Which has me worried! Its all about the pitching and batting controls for me. They create far more immersion than simply pressing X constantly.

I've noticed that the yellow marker that indicates where the ball will land is a bit deceiving. If you're standing in that marker, your fielder will not react to the ball and it will simply hit him on the head. I've gotten in the habit of placing my fielder directly in front of the marker and holding the LB for the catch. You'll see him shift into position to make the catch.

It's not 100% foolproof, but it has saved me alot of aggravation.

Read below...However, it's the LEFT TRIGGER that you use, not the LEFT BUMPER.

On a flyball to the OF, routine or not, I just continually press the LEFT TRIGGER until the ball is caught.

It sort of lines the player up and preloads their catching animation.

Was the fielding this bad in 2k8? Aside from the meatball problem, I actually enjoyed 2k8 last year and have been thinking about picking up 2k9 since it can be had for cheap.
