    2k8 or 2k9?

I know there are probably a few of these type of threads out there but wanted to throw the question out again, now that we are in the off-season for baseball.

If you had to choose between 2k8 or 2k9, which one would you go with and why?

I know either are "great" games; I'm just looking for which one is the most-playable on my 360.

I'm not interested in 2k7 as I like the idea of the R-stick controls in the other 2 games.

If you want to play online, get 2K9. If you have the hard drive space to run 2K8 off your hard drive, I think its single player is better, because the pitching and hitting a far improved. But ripping it to your hard drive is fairly important, as it drastically reduces the stuttering the game has.

I'm only play offline. I have Head Coach on my HDD right now and since I only have a 20-gig., I don't really have room for a 2nd game.

In 2k8, is there a way to tone down the number of meatballs thrown?

          Yeah...

          1. Don't put the total control pitching slider over 80.

          2. Don't put the A.I power slider above 25-32. I think I have mine set at 28, but I might have lowered it a month or so ago to 25. I have the A.I contact way up though...I think it's maxed out.

          3. Don't put the A.I skill slider above 25. The higher this slider is, the more rigged/ridiculous comebacks you'll see.

          4. Master the pitching controls.

For me, when I throw a meatball, it's not hammered every single time. Most of the time they swing right through it, or foul it off. Throwing one to a star slugger increases the chance of it getting hit hard though.

In the last game I played in my franchise(vs Red Sox), I threw a lot of meatballs, cause I wasn't use to using a mad catz controller for 2k8(my battery/charger pack died so I couldn't use my official xbox controllers), and one inning the A.I didn't crush any of the meatballs, they just kept hitting singles. They scored 3 or 4 runs on nothing but singles. David Ortiz and Micheal Young ended up crushing meat balls later in the game though. With all the meatballs I threw that game, I still only lost 7-1. If I had played on any of the default difficulties, I would have easily been crushed by double digits.

2k8 gets ragged on a lot, but with the right slider tweaks, you will find yourself enjoying the game. The only major problem I have with the game is that the A.I rarely steals...But you don't even notice after awhile. It's actually pretty funny when the A.I catches you off guard and swipes second base.

2k8 let's you give a player a batting stance or pitching delivery. 2k9 doesn't. This is the main reason why I didn't get 2k9. There's no way I was going to bat using those ugly default batting stances. So if you like having more edit options, get 2k8.

2k8 has take out slides. 2k9 doesn't...I have no idea why these were removed for 2k9.

2k8 has better pitching controls. 2k9 just has a watered down version of 2k8's pitching. It's way too easy to pitch in both games, but 2k9 was not challenging at all. The base running controls are better in 2k8 too. 2k9 does have cool base stealing controls though.

Players actually hit the free agent market in 2k8's franchise mode. In 2k9, most of the players re-sign with their team. The main thing wrong with 2k8's franchise mode is that, players sometimes ask for too much or give a huge discount. After the 2008 season in my franchise, K-Rod wanted like 20 million a year! He didn't get signed till the next off season. After the 2009 season, Lackey only wanted like 5 million annually, and 7 years.

The only reason to not get 2k8 is that the rosters will be outdated for you. I don't even think you can get the last roster update either, cause 2k shut down the servers. You can always just start up a franchise and let the A.I make trades, so it won't matter if the rosters are 100% accurate.

            Re: 2k8 or 2k9?

HK, thanks for the reply. I rented 2k8 last year and did enjoy the game for the most part, but never really messed with sliders. I'll keep those tweaks in consideration when playing.

Any other slider changes I should be aware of or is there a set on the site that I should look to for reference?

I think I'll give 2k8 a shot; it's less than $10 at GameStop, which also helps. I've got The Show 09 on my PS2 and PSP which I use a lot, but wanted to get a baseball presence on my 360.

              Re: 2k8 or 2k9?

This is what I posted on the 2k forums a year or so ago...I tried to remember what changes I made off the top of my head and edited it as close to how my sliders currently are. Next time I play 2k8 I'll scan for changes that I forgot to make.

              I recommend the following:

              Aerial Cam
              Total Control Pitching
              Swing Stick 2.0
No Strike Zone (Even with this off, you can still find out how big the strike zone is by holding down the left trigger and moving it around..When it rumbles, it means you found the edge of the strike zone of that particular area.)
              No Ball Trail
              No Auto Reselect fielder
              No USER Inside Edge
(You can leave this stuff on if you want, but if you want a more realistic experience, turn it off.)

Start from the Legend difficulty setting. You'll have to start from 0 and count up, cause the slider bars aren't numbered!(LAME) Also, If you plan on just playing franchise mode and not exhibition mode, just start up a franchise as soon as you get the game, cause your exhibition sliders will NOT transfer over when you start up your franchise. You'll have to put the sliders in again(LAME).

There's also "Franchise Sliders" that let you manipulate how fast players progress or regress. You can find these when you load up your franchise and go to the "My 2k8" tab. I have never heard of anyone finding a good setting for these progression/regression franchise sliders, so I've been meaning to find a good setting my self. These sliders are very important to your franchise. If set wrong, you could have a lot of players declining too early, or progressing at a ridiculous pace. It might be best to keep these sliders really low.

                Re: 2k8 or 2k9?

And here's a work a around for a franchise mode retirement bug.

Step #1. Save your franchise with one minor league playoff game left to play. You have to do this so you can still edit rosters.

Step #2. Simulate that last minor league game/series, then enter the off season(DO NOT SAVE AT ANY TIME DURING THIS STEP). I think the draft is before the "players leaving" part, so just select auto draft to speed things up, cause right now you just need to get to the "players leaving" part. When you get to the "Players Leaving" part, you can see every player in the league who is being lost to retirement or free agency. If you see A-Rod or some other players that you don't think should retire yet, write down their name and age on a piece of paper. After doing that, you now know exactly who is going to retire, so exit your franchise WITHOUT saving.

Step #3. Re-load up your franchise. Now lower the age of the players that you wrote down, so that they are in their mid 20's.

Step #4. Once again, simulate that last minor league playoff game and enter the off season...Do the draft. When you get to the "players leaving process", you'll notice that none of the players that you wrote down will be retiring. Once you get deeper into the off season, it will let you edit rosters again. You can now change the players age back to what it should be. Remember, you now have to make those players one year older from what you wrote down. At this point you should be able to save your franchise now too.

The only problem 2K7 had was the amount of ridiculous home runs you could hit in 1 game, runs scored, and the robbed home runs problem.

after that, it's a pretty solid game.

No way. 2k7's horrible hit variety alone put it behind 2k8. In 2k7, I hit the ball in the same three places... Single up the middle, HR to left field, double over the left fielders head. It was rare to hit a ball in the gap or down the line in that game.

Some sliders didn't even work properly in 2k7. No matter how much you tweaked them, there would still be too many HR's hit and robbed.

When batting, it looked like the pitcher was just a foot away from you. This made the game unplayable after I played 2k8. I don't know how I ever caught up to anything playing with pitch speed maxed out.

The only things I miss from 2k7 are the A.I steals, and the graphics..

I made a few corrections to my sliders.

                            A.I Contact - 90
                            A.I Power - 24

That's ^ how I have it in my franchise.

My exhibition sliders had the A.I power at 28, which was too high, cause I just tried playing against the Giants right now and they pounded the ball. They hit a double or HR on every meat ball. I guess I just forgot to lower the A.I's power the last time I was messing with my sliders. I use to have the A.I contact at 80, so having their power at 28 wasn't bad. The reason I upped their contact to 90 was because I was striking out way too many A.I batters.

I am in the middle of a problem with MLB 2k7...I bought the game and love everything about it! the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is pretty sweet. the only thing that i dont like is the fact that i keep trying to update my damn rosters and after about 2 games of playing with them i get a damaged file error...i cant save anymore and everything that i had is now damaged and is gone as soon as i turn off my system...is there anything i can do to make this glitch go away? and also is there a huge drop from MLB 2k7's graphics and 2k8's? i am looking to get 2k8 for christmas because i cant sit down and keep playing 2k7 as a quick play type of game...i like franchise and i cant play a franchise because of the damaged file glitch! if anyone can answer my question about the glitch or if there is a huge graphical drop in 2k7 and 2k8 i would greatly appreciate it. THANKS!
