    Graphics

I don't know if this belongs here or in the baseball other forum. If the mods feel it should be moved, than go ahead and move it, but I am not a game designer/developer and am wondering what stops the graphics on mlb 2k to be up to par with the show? Is it the console, the developers, or it won't fit on the disk?

    Re: Graphics

From my understanding reading some of the Uncharted interviews, blu ray matters. They state that you can just pile on the textures when you have the space. They prove this when you see the game. I'm not going to get into what system is better, but I think the 1st party studios take advantage of the PS3 HW.

I'm not trying to make this a console war, but I am just curious looking at screenshots of the show and am wondering why 2k can't look like that.

It has nothing to do with console, or the disc being used. It's all about the technology (Game/Graphics Engine) & how the developer uses it. Since we haven't really seen screens like the screens being posted in The Show Forum over here (Close-ups) we only can go by what's been posted by 2K, ESPN & by what Chase stated around Player Faces.

You also have to remember each developer's Art Style is different also

Thanks for the response. I may be getting ahead of myself and by the look of the first blog the game seems to look good graphically and let me just add that I don't think graphics are more important than gameplay, but think that it is important to a certain extent.

So when a developer states that they are able to acheive something because of the disc, is that PR i.e. blowing smoke? Have you developed a game to make the argument you're stating? I'm curious that's all. Uncharted dev say the textures are a result of blu ray and you say it's not about the disc being used.

I think it really just comes down to the graphics engine 2K uses. I understand that a blu-ray disc holds more data, but the actual appearance of things like the way uniforms crease and fold according to the models movements and lighting is engine ( physics ) based and doesn't require gigs and gigs of data.

The following is just an opinion, but I think MLB 2K would benifit majorly if the engine they used was rebuilt partially or totally. In fact, I think one of the insights mentioned they did work on the fielding part of the engine this year.

The blu-ray factor comes in with the size and amount of textures, sounds, and content.

No I'm not a developer, or work in the Gaming Industry. As for the BD being a reason a game may look better graphically, if that's there reasoning then so be it, but when games being developed on DVD9 look just as good or better as those being developed on BD, it tells me the Graphics/Physics Engine is what's making that happen & not the actual disc space.

I mean look @ Mass Effect 2 as an example

Fully agree. They can only crank the graphics so high with their engine because the framerate will suffer if they push it too much, which means the engine is not optimized for graphics. It doesn't matter what platform it is played on. The disc size/format also doesn't matter in this case because they can only go so high with the textures because of the limitations of the engine.

So if they changed the engine, they could tune the graphics to the max.

That's a possibility. It's usually a give or take. I mean look @ MLB 2K7. Graphically it was , but it suffered from some frame-rate issues. Not to mention it ran @ 30FS.

The trade-off we've seen is in order to get to 60FPS the graphics have taken a hit. This is due to the ENGINE being used. It's a port over from the OLD XBOX days.

                          Hi ,
Alls I know 2 years ago 2k hockey 8 and Mlb 2k7 had Excellent graphics but on the ps3 they had framrate issues , I believe it couldnt hold the framrate .
Then the next year both games had new player models that looked horrible and washed out poor detail but I think framrate was improved .
What else could it be why would anyone change those perfect player models to what they have currently and if you doubt me just fire up mlb2k7 and Nhl 2k8 just beautiful

                            Different developer company back then

2K Sports needs to stick to one developer company. It would help.

Does The Show use a Blu-Ray disc?
I'm not sure it does....when I was at SCEA...I asked one of the devs and he said they are VERY close to using up the standard 25 GB of space on the disc and must go with a dual layer disc soon.
