One of the issues with baseball games is the lack of "user wildness".... maybe the newest patch has corrected that, I don't know.
And I'm almost afraid to suggest tinkering with the mechanics. But anyway.....
Here is my suggestion for a new pitching mechanic. I'm not a programmer or anything like that, just an idea.
Much of the pitching remains unchanged in my plan.
1. You still select the pitch you want to throw using the x, a, y, and bumper buttons. At this point the pitcher becomes set.
2. You use the same "gesture" system to execute the pitch. down, then up for a fastball.
3. The new part. When you select a pitch, you don't see the baseball icon. Instead, you see a semi-transparent circle that varies in size. For pitchers with better control, this circle is smaller. For a pitcher like Rich Hill, the circle might encompass 1/3 of the plate.
A well executed pitch will end up somewhere in this circle. It could be in the center of the circle, on the perimeter, wherever, so long as the pitch is a successful gesture. If the pitch is not a successful gesture, the ball doesn't hit the circle at all and is easier for the batter's eye to pick up.
Below is an illustration.baseball idea.jpg
The strike zone on the left is Chris Carpenter aiming for the outside corner with a 2 seam fastball. A well executed pitch would result in the pitch landing somewhere in the yellow.
The strike zone on the right is what a pitcher with lesser control can expect.
Now, here's where it results in more walks. In order to stay out of the middle of the plate, notice how the bigger circle has to be centered on the left corner, otherwise there is a chance it could be a fastball right down the middle. However, Carpenter can encompass nothing but the strike zone, and the chance for a hittable pitch is still very low.
And finally, if you really wanted to go all out, you could make the circle size vary for different pitches. Joel Zumaya would have a very small circle on fastballs, while his secondary pitches would have a larger circle.
Again, I'm not a developer, and this is a very simplistic idea. But I'm throwing things out there. I still want the 2k series to be a good game, and fixing the pitching could go a long way towards that.
