How do you like auto fielding?

For those who use or have tried this option, what do you think about it?

My experience has been awful, pitchers and infielders making way too many wild throws, even guys with accurate arms like Polanco. In fact, Polanco who had 5 errors last year in around 132 games has 4 errors in 11 games this year! My Phillies are terrible!

    How about you guys?

Try adjusting the error sliders maybe? Unfortunately I don't think they put the auto fielding option in the PC patch for some reason.....

Overall I like it, because I cant tell you how many times I've given up big plays because I couldn't see what fielder was selected so I reacted too late, or ran the wrong direction. I feel like the ai errors aren't nearly as bad as letting the CPU get a triple or even an inside the park hr out of what should have been a routine fly ball because I dont know who is selected.

I do wish we could still make throws with autofielding on tho.

I love it because I just want to pitch, not play defense. Mainly because I suck at defense.

I haven't used auto fielding because of the errors, but sometimes the ball pops up really high and you can't tell where the player is and where the ball will fall. I have been lucky to make no errors so far.

I haven't tried it yet but the option for auto fielding and baserunning is indeed in the PC version.

It is? Someone in the patch impressions said it wasn't, so I just took their word for it and didn't look. Thanks man.

Whats the point of auto fielding? It takes all the fun out of fielding, or getting that web gem, throwing out a runner etc.

I turned it on for a couple of games and enjoyed the animations a little bit, but I also like to be involved in every aspect of the game. It's just less fun to me to let the CPU do it. Fielding is pretty immersive and rewarding this year imo.

I agree, but I find it difficult when the ball is hit past my fielders before I know who is selected, or when a ball that should have been an easy fly out ends up falling through the gap for a triple because I couldn't tell what fielder I had selected. Or the worst, when the ball is hit in the field, and I AM controlling the correct fielder, but the fielder stutters when I start to move them, instead of having a seamless transition from auto move to manual move.

Otherwise I'd much rather play with auto fielding off.

I really just wish the fielders would auto field, and then let me manually take over to move my guys or throw.

There is no fun with ball hit up the middle and you don't know or can't see which fielder you should select.

Real ballplayers do not hit, pitch, and play all positions in a game every game.

To the first point, I think camera angles have something to do with this. I use Joe's and they're very, very good. I have no problem whatsoever knowing which infielder is going to get the ball. I do have the occasional problem in the outfield of not knowing whether the CF or RF will pursue flies, but that's really not all that common. I'm starting to notice that the CPU defaults to the CF on those plays, so that eliminates some of the confusion and guesswork.

To the second point, I'm not sure anyone who plays this game actually thinks they're a real baseball player. Those who only want to do what one real player would do would be playing My Player mode, I presume. Outside of that mode, it's safe to assume that owners want to control more of what happens on the field.

It's obviously a matter of preference; for my part I think the mechanics and cameras make fielding really fun--much more so than watching the CPU do it. That's just me.

The CPU doesn't do it well, at least not in my franchise. I do it better than the CPU, even with the occasional goofs of not knowing who to select. However, the game is much less stressful letting the CPU cheat, err, I mean do the fielding. I still set the IF and OF positions.

I just love those double play misses on sharp grounders where the mighty CPU baserunner with 60 speed and less than 60 acceleration beats the throw to first. Yeah, as long as I see that and same with other guys rated under 70 speed, and my guys rated 80-plus speed get doubled up on same type of play, I am not sweating it.

Re: How do you like auto fielding?

I find that if you boost IF speed, it will give you the jump start to get to most balls. If you are finding that balls are getting through the IF that you should get to, try boosting their speed a bit.

What I found was that as you boosted their speed, that it played more and more like 2K10, which everyone complained about being too automatic. Now you can fiddle with the fielder speed sliders to find good balance for you, and then get to make what is the more compelling decisions, which is where to throw the ball.

I agree that 2K made auto-fielding to comprehensive when they also forced the CPU to make the throws, too. but this is really easily compensated by using the sliders and keeping it turned off.

There is something to be said for, however, using auto-fielding and auto-baserunning to play the game more like a graphical text sim with pitch-by-pitch turned on, and in which you get to do the pitching and hitting. If you are finding it to be sim enough, it turns it into a better sim game than even FPS BBPro was back in the day.

With the improved pitcher/batter match-up in online play, this would be my preferred mode. There is still enough lag that one hesitation by an OF will still result in a triple or worse every time. It's all playable and fun, but not very sim.

I don't think auto-fielding and baserunning is an online option, though. I would have to check.

I never have this problem, but different strokes for different folks I guess. I used to sometimes use auto fielding in MVP 05.
