I usually only try to power swing with a guy with a lot of power. Kemp, Fielder, Braun..etc. The most important part is the count. 2-0, 3-1, or even first pitch i might swing. It all depends on your sliders, but for a successful power swing you have to dead on.

I use a power swing for everyone until it gets to 2 strikes
      Then I use contact swing

I'm the opposite. The guys you listed have enough power to hit it out using the contact swing. I mostly use the power swing for lower power guys, gives them half a chance to do some damage.

I'm with you and the previous guy. I use power swing until I've got 2 strikes. Even then if I'm using a power/swing away type guy I still use power swing. It seems like contact swing is way too weak, so high contact low power guys just hit weak dribblers with contact a lot of the time.

I really like how it works, as far as I'm concerned most all hitters are trying to hit with power in most situations, even if they aren't "power" hitters. Even contact guys are swinging hard with the goal of ripping hard shots in a hole somewhere. Power doesn't have to mean home run power.

It seems to play out the same way in the game, if I use power swing with Jeter, I rip line drives or hard grounders (assuming I'm timing it right). Once I switch to contact and get defensive, I'm able to fight off tough pitches and keep at bats alive. Just the other night I got in a great battle after working a full count. I fought off like 5 fouls in a row with Jeter, then finally ripped an extra base liner through the right center gap using the contact swing. Felt awesome and realistic, my wife was even impressed by the ordeal (and she is usually just annoyed that I'm playing a stupid game ).

Ha-ha! My sweetie is an avid gamer herself (Skyrim, Tiny Tower), so she both understands my love of sports gaming AND is immensely impressed when I can actually string a few hits together!

i play with the cubs and I cannot score on pro. im so frustrated im ready to just sell this game. its not fun scoring 1 or 2 runs a game if that. seems pointless if I cant even score runs on pro. i dont want to be stuck on rookie forever. cant ever get that sweet timing. its always way in front or too late.

It takes patience and practice, padawan. Try using the classic batting configuration, or bump up the power/contact. Plus the Cubs aren't that great of an offensive team anyway.

A "padawan" could at least score more than 1 or 2 runs a game on Pro. Now a "grasshopper" on the other hand...

Hey man I know the feeling. I use the Twins (who just got no hit yesterday BTW) and it was very frustrating starting out. I have to say that it took me at least 20 games or so to really get the hang of hitting. Two things that have helped me out immensely are patience and always doing the power swing.

You really do need to work the count and not swing at a lot of pitches. Not even just balls either, but hard to handle pitches that are low in the zone or away. Those usually call for an easy out, either a dribbler or a soft pop fly. Wait for a nice fastball high or in the middle of the zone and crack it!

Doing the power swing for everyone also is a big help. I don't hit many home runs still. In 35 games in my season (which I only started hitting well recently) I have 8 with Josh Willingham and 6 with Justin Morneau, then 2 with a couple other guys. But the power swing seems to give the ball a little more "oomph" when it leaves the bat. I am able to hit the ball into the gap a lot more doing the power swing and have seen my doubles and RBI's increase exponentially since using solely the power swing (unless I am behind in the count mind you, then I just do the contact).

I pretty much had the exact same experience for those 20 or so games with only getting 1 or 2 or maybe 3 runs. Using what I just said though has helped tremendously. Also every once in a while I will still have a game where I just can't hit to save my life. I figure that is just when a pitcher is hot for some reason. For instance I just had an 11 inning game where I won 1 - 0 and the starting pitcher was in until the 10th. So my tips aren't perfect but they should help.

I usually will use it with most players but depending on the pitch. A power hitter I've found that even with contact they'll hit the ball out if its a bad pitch by the pitcher (if they miss their location).

Some players that are weaker and don't have as much power I use the power swing and they will hit doubles and get HRs as well.

I also agree with the comment about 2 strikes, most of the time its helpful to just use contact.

Exactly my approach. Whether its the 1st pitch for me or the 6th. Once I see that juicy one that is mid to high in the strike zone I jump on it.

The only time I swing at low pitches is when I have to protect the strike zone.

Now I hear everyone mention the contact or power swing. Then what is the X button swing?

I never use the power swing. I only use the X button or contact when I have to protect the strike zone.

Why is no one using the X button????

The X button swing is the classic batting option. The power/contact/defensive swing uses the analog stick. The X button on the analog hitting is used as a bunt.
