Once again, you did not adress the fact that you alrady have an update system in place, why can that not be used?

I also would like to point out that you said you were behind everyone but HH last year in sales. Inside Pitch had no franchise mode, and was widely regarded as a terrible singleplayer game, yet outsold your game why? Online play. I guess its not such a small percentage of people who care about online play after all...

You can choose not to buy the game for whatever reason you want. I'm not saying that you should ignore anything you think is a big problem. I don't come on here trying to sell the game...I come here because not too long ago I was in your position, and it would have been nice to get info and answers straight from the source before deciding what game to buy. I listen to what you guys have to say, and I balance that with what I know from working on the game, what we find out from focus groups and other customer feedback, what marketing tells us, etc. And I'm straight out telling you that supporting online play drains significant resources that could be used elsewhere and doesn't provide commeasurate sales returns. You can disbelieve me all you like, but that's the way it is, and taking cheap shots like the one above isn't going to convince me that you're some kind of expert on what makes games sell. What happened to the last game you thought was really great? Oh yeah, it's gone because it didn't sell enough.

We'd love to put in all the features that everybody wants, but we have to make choices. Sometimes the choices we make result in taking away something that YOU would have wanted in favor of something that you peronally don't care about (but that a bunch of other people do). I'm not saying you have to be happy about that and buy the game anyway, but saying (or implying) that Sega is dumb for not doing things your way just furthers the perception that people who post on internet message boards are hardcore malcontent whiners who don't represent the game-buying market as a whole.

            Bravo, FP.

This is an excellent post, and while I completely disagree with your decision on online rosters .... I respect that it's your decision. You can't do everything, and you can't please everyone. Only time will tell if you're making the right decision.

For what it's worth, I just feel that in the constant EA/Sega war across all sports .... EA has the casual market sewn up. You can't win that fight. To draw an analogy, they are the M$ of gaming .... and Sega Sports needs to play the role of Linux. Cater to the hardcore, the evangelists - the people who's opinions are respected by their peers. Stuff like playable online rosters, for instance - it doesn't please the masses, but will please your hardcode audience who will hopefully convert others.

..... Of course that was High Heat's strategy, and look how that worked out. So what the heck do I know?

To reiterate (from someone who will probably skip ESPN this year mainly due to this issue): You as a consumer have every right not to buy a game for whatever reason you want to. But to claim that guys who are working their asses off making the game are idiots for not agreeing with you .... well, that's one sure way to make sure your opinion isn't heard.

And to attack a guy who goes above and beyond his job description in order to give you info? That's just being ungrateful and childish. FP is obviously trying to make the best game he can - and it's possible to disagree with someone while still having (and showing) respect.

I'll look into what we can do with the Xbox Live update thing, although that would take away the ability for people to play with the original rosters, which some people may not like.

Inside Pitch was dead last in sales, and I wasn't even taking it into consideration. It was sort of a dead duck that MS threw out there because they got tired of spending money on it.

Thanks for clearing that up. When you said everyone but HH, I figured you included IP in that. I know lots of people (including myself) who bought it only for online play, which made it quite enjoyable.

Well EA has one hell of a online plan for the PS2. EA actually spends time on the online part of their game. I would think 90% of the online players would rather use updated rosters online so why not do it? The game gets old fast but Sega doesn't care because they already got their money. Look at ESPN Basketball why would i play that game online when NONE of the teams have the right roster? Don't worry about how much money EA made of online or how bad Inside Pitch did with online play just focus on making your game the best it can be and be willing to take a loss to make a gain. Scared money don't make money so play it safe and have no job tomorrow.
