If you guys can do it for football damn it why not here? Sounds like laziness?

Across all platforms? There's 4 platforms (PC, PS2, Xbox, and GC), and it's only coming out on 2. Secondly they've put out online games on these 2 platforms many times in the past.
This sounds like a bug fix to a problem found during MS or Sony approval.
