Fielding flyballs is really the only thing that I'm having problems with after 2 games played. Despite what IGN said, FP batting is actually pretty cool. Granted, I have it set on Timing hitting, Slow pitch speed, and AllStar diffulty, but it only took me about a few innings on those settings to get the hang of hitting in FP mode. By the 6th inning in my first game, I was able to draw a 3-2 walk with Albert Pujols at the plate by laying off a 12-6 curveball from Kip Wells. Actually, I was pretty surprised at how realistic it seemed watching the pitches come in on those settings. I suspect I'll have to bump up the pitch speed with some more practice, but for now, I like the results I'm getting. First game, I lost 11-2, walked twice, struck out 9 times, and had 7 hits (2 doubles and a triple, to go with 4 singles). I even had one 9 pitch at bat where I kept fouling off pitch after pitch with Bo Hart before finally popping up to short. Second game, I lost 10-4 (Rolen and Edmonds went yard), I struck out 8 times, walked once, and got hit by a pitch (that was pretty cool to see).
Not sure how long it will take to get used to fielding flyballs, but I can already tell that I am going to be playing a good bit of this mode. I really like pitching in FP, and fielding ground balls requires no adjustment time at all. I also like that you can see part of your swing when you take a practice swing...in fact, this mode partially eliminates the ugliness of the swing animation (since you only see it when you are pitching), so that's another bonus.
I also like that you can turn the sports ticker on while you're playing in FP..even if it's not something you would see if playing in real life. (The ticker looks great, btw.) Anyways, if you liked FP in ESPN Football and are wondering how it is in ESPN Baseball, give it a shot. Change the settings and you'll have hitting down within a few innings. And if anyone has any tips on catching flyballs, I'd really appreciate hearing 'em.
