There's a cursor based system which I've never used and a true aim system. The true aim system is a 360 degree system. In other words, if the ball is outside you have to swing outside, up swing up, down swing down etc.... However, it goes further. You swing with the left analog stick which is pressure sensitive. So if the ball is far outside, you need to push the analog stick the entire direction that way. If it's a little off the center of the plate towards the outside, you should push outside slightly on the analog stick to make the best contact. If you push it the entire way you won't make the best contact, but it doesn't mean you won't hit the ball.
It takes a little getting used to, but is very rewarding when you get hits. It's different than MVP's pure swing system because you pretty much have to push up to hit a HR in MVP and down to hit a grounder. MVP also isn't pressure sensitive.
Pitching in ESPN is something many have trouble with right away. People can't seem to find the plate. It takes a little getting used to. Once you have your team, you need to know your pitchers. To throw a strike on the outside part of the plate, you push the left analog stick towards that area and throw. If you push too much, it goes for a ball. Not enough, it won't go outside and will likely be over the plate. Each pitcher have their own abilities so some guys you can push pretty far outside to hit the corners while others you have to barely move the left stick to hit the corner. Again, it takes a while to master, but once you do it's a lot of fun.
All I can really say is that it takes time (10 games or so) to really get a good feel for the game. Once you do I think you'll have a good time with it.
