Could be different reviewers that examined the titles this year and last year resulting in different scoring results...or they felt that MLB 2k5 improved more than MVP within the span of a year. Also, the apparent changes in MLB are possibly more easily noticed compared to MVP. It seems that a lot of the changes in MVP may be things that need to be discovered through extensive play (lefty HR, steal, walks, player progression, etc)while a lot of the changes in 2k5 are more visual(player models, presentation). Reviews are simply opinions, not facts so take that to heart as well. I would not put too much into a review in regards to gameplay unless it comes from OS or some other respected sports gaming site.

Absolutely, their reviews or any others, does not affect my decision making what so ever. I just like reading and finding out what their take on the games are and why they give them a certain score. The reviewers at Game Informer tend to be looking for a different gaming experience than I am!
I have last years issue and I am going to check out of curiosity and see if it is the same guys reviewing!

I really have to wonder if they were reviewing a beta copy of MLB 2K5, or a final reviewable copy. The guys at IGN just said some things were changed, like with the Slam Zone. I know mags run ahead of schedule, but it still seems very early to be reviewing the games.

Here is my opinion on the scores and I think it makes some sense.

2k5 improved a lot, mostly on the front end. They also added some very noticable innovations while fixing most of the problems from last year. (cept for fielding) Fixing the problems alone should bump it up to an 8 and with the innovations you get another half point.

MVP as they're saying is basically the same game as last year which is not a bad thing. A lof of the fixes are things that would take a lot of playtime to notice but that again is not a bad thing. They didn't do too much on the front end which may have hurt their score tho as reviewers often want to see pretty graphics and stuff like that. This is probably the reason this year's version was dropped down to an 8.5.

Now bear in mind this is just my opinion on why the scores were the way they are. I don't often make reviews the be all and end all of my purchasing decisions but it's nice to get some input from outside sources.

GI have been anti-ESPN MLB/WSB for quite some time (giving espn 2k3 a 7 because of the swing animations and wsb a 7.5 for reasons not mentioned) so this must mean this year's version is much improved for them to give it a decent score. I can't wait.

Then why the same score? Hell, both seem pretty low to me...

since when is and 8.5 out of a 10 low. what did you expect it to be 10 or a 9.5. An 8.5 is great in my book.

since when is and 8.5 out of a 10 low. what did you expect it to be 10 or a 9.5. An 8.5 is great in my book.

Since it became the average score when it comes to most reviews.

HQ games usually get at least a 9.something.

What if all the websites/magazines/message boards give all the baseball games that come out this year an 8.5/10 or 85/100 or whatever out of 5 would make an 8.5?? Are you just not gonna buy a baseball game this year then??? LOL :O
