Pitch Variability - How does this work?

I've been tinkering with this slider since I got the game, trying to find a way that will force me to give up walks. I have had this slider set to 0,50, and 100, but I'm not noticing any real difference between the setttings. I use classic and effort pitching, but the only way I'll give up any walks is if I really try to.

I think ESPN baseball last year had this nailed. You would struggle controlling poor pitchers and couldn't help bu give up a walk from time to time. This year I feel like I have too much control regardless of the slider setting.

Right now....contrary what it says on the screen in the game...I have mine set to 100. I think they misrepresented what is stated in the game...More variablity(the higher the number) means more chance to throw balls. I was pitching Glavine against the Reds last night(GREAT GAME that I won 2-1 with a homer from Piazza!) and he struck out 8 and walked 2. That seems about right to me. I play with no hot/cold zones, no vibration(KEY!!! very important!) and no cursor. It's tricky at first...but if you UP the AI skill(you don't even have to bump up the AI hitting ability...just the skill) you will not want to pitch anything in the middle of the zone...so you try and nibble...and before you know it you have a 3-1 count against Adam Dunn. Are you going to throw this guy meat? Nope...so you try a fastball outside....the variability kicks in....and you threw him ball 4. Will you do the same with Adam LaRue? probably not...but you still might walk him in the same situation.
