The game describes the R trigger as a target. How is this used in KZone pitching? Am I supposed to aim something? I'm confused why sometimes a red target appears and a ball appears. I thought this was just true aim, no targets.

The ball icon appears when you correctly guess the location of the pitch, or when the pitcher just muffs it. It's showing you where the pitch is going so you have a free chance to bomb it.

As for the target thing, that's there to hide pitch location in multiplayer games. While picking the location you want to pitch to, you can pull the R trigger to lock that as the location you'll throw to, but you can continue to move the icon around afterwards so the other player can't see where you're going to throw it everytime.
