Where as the fielder goes after the ball automatically and you get to throw the ball manually wherever you want.

No, it will start the correct fielder in motion and then you're on your own. It DOES have an option, once you get to the ball, to LOCK ON, that will have your fielder lock on and catch the ball.
I've always been an auto field/manual throw guy, but I can say after practicing I find the fielding pretty responsive. There is also a speed burst that helps you (me) make up for the mistakes, or slow response time. -
