Making MLB 2K5 work for me

I read all the posts for a week – read all the good and lots of bad comments about the game – then hesitantly went out on Saturday and bought it, expecting the worst. Nice surprise… it’s a pretty good game – very addictive, and the commentary team of John and Joe is the BEST in any game ever, bar none. Very immersive baseball game play experience with them chatting away inning after inning, and I’ll definitely miss them next year and beyond (I don’t buy EA products).

Anyway, some things in the game stand out as just being wrong or too annoying to look past, so here’s a brief list of them and of the things I’m doing to improve the game from my perspective.

First thing I noticed that were off (that annoyed me too much) were the players’ body proportions and some batting stances. By editing each player’s physique and making everything a ‘5’ (chest, forearms, etc) the players all look pretty good now. I’m also experimenting with bumping up chest, upper arm and thighs of the sluggers to ‘6’, just to give them a bit more bulk. I’m also eliminating all batting stances of the “Tejada” variety where the batters arms are hoisted way up in the air, cutting off the part of the upper arms and most of the bat (when the batting camera fully zoomed in). I like to see the entire player, plus those stances just look too unnatural as well, IMO. They simply weren’t animated-drawn very well.

Tons of player ratings are off IMO. Individual pitchers’ pitch Speeds all need to be lowered by an average of 10 points – way too many 97 MPH fastballs, etc. And pitchers as batters should NOT have Contact and Doubles in the 40’s and Home Runs in the 20’s like many do, for example. And in general, position players’ Contact, Home Runs etc. ratings are too generically high as well. So I’ve started editing those: most pitchers to around 10 Contact, 5 Doubles and 2 Home Runs; mediocre fielders Contact begins in the 20’s and so forth. So my average hitter – say 260. – will have a Contact rating around 50-60, making the 70 Contact and up guys stand out more and all the more dangerous. As it is now, I’ve got one SS on my team who supposedly bats 180. Yet his Contact is 57 – way too high in comparison to a 300. hitter.

Fielding ratings are way, way too generically high, especially for pitchers, and I’ll be editing many of those as well. I’ve also noticed the Running Speed of players is all screwy, and they’re simply running too quickly when fielding especially – note how quickly (jumpy!) the P covers first or third. These ratings will need to be coordinated with the Fielding Speed slider, so there’s some work there to get the Speed ratings working properly.

I seldom play anything other than single seasons so, this will work for me (see thread title) plus I always spend more time editing than playing anyway. Anyway again, this game has a few problems but it’s nowhere near as broken as some have made it out to be. In fact, once it’s looking and running properly, it’s a very, very decent BB game… for sure the best I’ve played, all things considered :-)

Re: Making MLB 2K5 work for me

    You're right, it's a very addictive game.
Once the passed balls bug was fixed I was able to overlook any other flaws.
I won't knock anyone who loves MVP and hates this game; just goes to show you how personal preferences vary; but I'm just happy I made the switch from MVP. I'll be logging a lot of hours on 2k5 this summer.
It's on me. I shook his hand too hard. It was a hard ... kind of a slap-shake.

"What? You can't challenge a scoring play?''

Re: Making MLB 2K5 work for me

I'll be getting my copy of MLB 2K5 later this week. Even though I've read message after message (and review after review), I'm still not sure what to expect. I'm glad the passed ball bug is fixed. But I've heard about so many other glitches. So, I'm kind of worried.

Based on your NFL 2K5 work, baa7, I have the utmost respect for your opinion. So, let me ask you: How good can this game be with proper ratings adjustments (as you described)? Do you ever watch CPU vs CPU games? If so, do the results seem realistic? I am interested in Season Mode only. Do some of the reported glitches apply only to Franchise Mode (not Season mode)? Have you seen stats all messed up (as reported by others)? For example, CFs in AAA being credited with a Win? Can the XBOX version be patched? If so, is it likely (if you care to guess)? And also, if so, will it require XBOX Live?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I've enjoyed MVP Baseball 2005 so far. So, if 2K5 lets me down, I'll be disappointed, but not without my baseball fix. I'm hoping I enjoy 2K5 just as much (if not more), though.

Hey pstrickert, thanks for the kind words. The first thing I always do is check out how responsive the ratings are to editing. From what I’ve seen so far, this game has tons of potential for tweaking it to play a very serious sim game of baseball.

I’ve heard about all the franchise bugs and some sound unfixable – like the first round draft glitch in NFL 2K5. But I’ve also heard there’s been a roster update (?) that’s helped with the bunged up roster problems (?) I’m new to this game (2 days) so I’m just getting with the program. I haven’t seen any of these problems yet – stat issues either – although I did notice one player in my lineup after I had moved him to the minors. But I just cut him from the team and that was the end of that – da bum :-) One issue I plan to check very soon is the starting pitchers not fatiguing/always rested during the season – that one sounds bad if true.

The CPU vs CPU games are very cool to watch – great presentation, and Miller and Morgan are worth the $20 alone. There are a few cut scenes that don’t work – foul balls for one – but overall it’s really well done. The On Command Base running feature is a complete BLAST. The different pitching types (K-zone, etc.) look very interesting although I’m still only using Classic pitching right now as I test ratings.

For someone who wants an out-of-the-box hardcore imitation of MLB, this game will probably be a disappointment. Star player faces look awful – so bad I’m relegating Sosa and many others to the minors, hopefully to never have to see them again. But that’s me. I’d rather my players look good in close-ups than care about who they are or are supposed to be. Plus it makes changing their ratings easier if I don’t know them as players and have no idea if they’re actually good or not :-)

Anyway, overall the game plays a pretty good game of baseball, with Joe’s sliders (and a few other tweaks). And that’s what counts. I will say though that without an global editor I currently don’t see this game as ever being much more than a pick-up-and-play-a-game game, and maybe play a season if the glitches aren’t too bad. Sounds like MVP might be the play-a-franchise game of choice this year.
