One thing that is killing this game for me!

Hit variety or the complete lack there of. It just kills the realism to see 15 dribblers to 1st and 3rd base in a game. Then when I do get the ball off the ground it's a soft liner to, usally the 1st and 3rd baseman. Then when I get really good wood on the ball it's a blooper.

Look, I know above might be slightly exaggerated. There are the occasional gap shots or homeruns but the majority of the time when I make contact it's one of the above. If wasn't for this lack of variety in hitting, I would be loving this game even with it's other flaws. I absolutely love the pitching. I get very realistic stats as far as strikeouts and walks go. I don't need to say anything about the graphics.

Is anyone out there getting good hit variety with cursor hitting(I haven't tried it yet).

What I really don't get, I thought last years game had pretty good hit vartiety. What happened?

Re: One thing that is killing this game for me!

First of all, the problem IMO is all the batters are all HR hitters. There's little variety because there's no subtlety in their hitting. And I feel there's too many HR's and power shots in general using the Contact swing. So I'm tweaking individual batting ratings to see if I can get less HR's with the Contact swing, which would make having to using the Power swing an important part of the game.

Also, I have a theory: the lower the AI Skill slider (determines CPU hits) the less pre-scripted hits -- line drives into the corners and that always find the same gaps in the infield. And with AI Contact up, the CPU can still hit. I'm using joe & g's sliders tweaked, with AI Skill lowered to 60 and AI Contact up to 70-80.

Between testing these two aspects of the gameplay, I really feel I'm starting to get some results -- meaning a greater variety of hits: lots more fly balls to the middle and deep OF, and less auto-homeruns, for example. Plus plenty of soft foul balls, many of which very catchable -- unlike all those foul pole screamers. And I've seen 3-4 new cut sceens I've never seen before, mostly with foul balls that stay in the park.

Do a test. Create a test roster using the Red Sox (default quick game Visitors). Take their starting lineup and make their individual batting ratings: Contact @ 85; 2B, 3B and HR @1. What you'll have are the beginnings of where player ratings should be. Now start up a game and pitch FB's to the CPU Red Sox. You'll see a nice assortment of hard hit ground balls, and a lot of medium fly balls and foul balls. Then bump up the 2B, 3B and HR ratings 15-20 points and you''ll see hits to the corners and balls to the track and even HR's. Somewhere around 85-25-15-10 is my prototype for Ichiro -- his adjusted batting ratings that reflect the way he actually hits in real life: hard shots through the infield, line drive hits, medium fly balls and the occasional HR.

This is a pretty big issue as far as I'm concerned. Every player in this game needs a serious ratings adjustment, because what they are now are little more than Triple Play Baseball players. That's mostly what's causing the lack of hit variety, IMO.

Re: One thing that is killing this game for me!

When I first started I was having a hard time. I realized I was swinging at a lot of low pitches that were actually balls. I hit a lot of infield dribbler. I'm now seeing a variety of hits. What I suggest you do is play the game and bat for both teams (pause/options/change sides). Just practice, adjust the sliders, and I don't think it will take too long to get the knack of it.

                baa7,

Have you fixed you entire roster? If so I'd like to try it out, get a feel for what you've done. I've decided to hold up on my season until it's almost time for the real season, so I'll fool around with some things.

I'm useing Bigfenjoe & G's pure realism sliders. I think they work great for everything except hittting. I'm seeing a serious # for homers also, both me and the CPU.

Your theory sounds good but way to much work. I don't mind tweaking some sliders but I'm not into adjusting ratings for every player in the game. T2 should have done thier homework!

you see so many HRs cause his power slider is WAY too high. turn that down to about 44 and you will see much better results. i also believe that the sliders that everyone wants to make love to, has skill too high and contact too low. turn AI skill down, and raise their power for more balls in play that arent perfectly placed in the gaps or over the wall. as for you having too many HRs, the power slider will help and lower your contact if you are still too high.
also, for the guy whining about no hit variety and too many dribblers. quit swinging at crap and you wont get the dribblers. as for variety, try working the count and getting a pitch you can hit. also slider adjustment will help with that. your swing matters a good deal as well. if you are always on top of the ball you get excesive grounders like my friend mike. if you swing under pitches, like i have a tendency to do, you get lots of fly balls. so if you sonsistently hit under/above or late/early, you will see the same thing. have the AI vary pitch location and speed more to help with variety of hits. and remember that sliders are meant to customize the game to your abilities and likings, not what a group of people on a forum swear is the gospel.

I often wondered what became of Grumpy after the Seven Dwarves split up...

I'm not recommending anyone start editing... too much work. I've only done one team and am testing them. I'll try some of the slider suggestions here, but there are basic programming problems with the hitting game that can't be overcome without edits IMO.

The dribblers are caused by Sinkers I believe. I'm using test pitchers that don't have Sinker pitches, and I haven't seen one of those goofy dribblers in days.

also, for the guy whining about no hit variety and too many dribblers. quit swinging at crap and you wont get the dribblers. as for variety, try working the count and getting a pitch you can hit. also slider adjustment will help with that. your swing matters a good deal as well. if you are always on top of the ball you get excesive grounders like my friend mike. if you swing under pitches, like i have a tendency to do, you get lots of fly balls. so if you sonsistently hit under/above or late/early, you will see the same thing. have the AI vary pitch location and speed more to help with variety of hits. and remember that sliders are meant to customize the game to your abilities and likings, not what a group of people on a forum swear is the gospel.
