    questions about mvp

I have never really played the MVP series but have a few questions.

    1) How is the roster mangagement? Players given rest days? are good players sent to the minors for no reason?

    2) What does the off-season involve? Is there a draft? How is the free agency? Does the cpu address needs?

    3) Are the stats realistic?

    4) Does the cpu call up minor leaguers to replace a struggling player? Do they bring guys up to fill an injury spot then send the players back once the injured player comes back?

    5) does the schedule change each year? Does the interleague games change each year?

These are a few questions. If there is anything else that you feel is important to know, please post them.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: questions about mvp

Since you mentioned interleague Im guessing your asking about MVP 2005

    1) Full Roster management of MLB, AAA, AA, A clubs. Players do get tired and need rest but they also get happy/unhappy about playing time or status of the team, etc. I dont know about frequency of them moving to the minors.

    2) Havent gotten to offseason yet.

    3) Stats are realistic, but that depends on how you play/sliders you use.

    4) When I sim for a long period of time I do see minor league players come up and go down, Yes they replace injured players.

    5) Not sure, havent finished a full season yet but I am at the end of July!

Pitch counts can be a struggle(8-11 pitches an inning), Walks and K's seem good, good number of foul balls. There is also a huge mod out there for PC, not sure if they tinkerd with any rosters/players attributes to make the game play better.

I am playing PC version, fyi.

I cant really address CPU moves since I dont really pay that much attention to the other teams, but looking at "Games Played" stats at the end of the year shows that most players are given occasional rest days. I like to rest my guys when their stamina is in the 70s%. One thing I dont really likee is that as you go further into owner/dynasty mode the CPU often hangs on to aging, once good players and has them in A ball. Like in a couple years youll see a 39 year old Ken Griffey Jr. or 41 year old Mariano Rivera playing in A. It doesnt bother me that much though.

Off-season consists of Player Retirements, about a 10-round draft, signing rookies and re-signing players, free agents, and the signing coaches (not important at all).

Free-agency is pretty good. You cant always get the guys you want, and Ive gotten into some bidding wars with the CPU before (and often lose). Again, I dont really keep up with the CPU rosters and needs, but I havent noticed anything outright crazy (like the Cardinals signing the best available 1B).

The stats are all reasonable, and the schedule (including interleague) changes each year.

          Re: questions about mvp

          thanks DK.

The hanging on to old ball players and putting them in A ball wouldn't bother me much at all either, because those guys should have probably retired. Besides nothing like A ball becoming the Senior Citizens Circuit.

One of the problems that I have noticed in The Show is that players (Thome, Glavine, and Derek Lee) have all been sent to the minors for no apparent reason. That bugs me to death.

Another question. How are trades on here? Do teams dump players when they are out of the chase so that they can get more money to go after big time free agents the next season? Also do teams in the chase go after needs to help them in their pennant chase?

            Re: questions about mvp

            1) How is the roster mangagement? Players given rest days? are good players sent to the minors for no reason?

The player managament is great, there are never any bugs ala 2k6. The fatigue/rest is also very well implemented. It's a nice bonus that you have to rest your everyday players. The minor leagues are well implemented too, I never see superstars chillin' down in the minors for no reason.

            2) What does the off-season involve? Is there a draft? How is the free agency? Does the cpu address needs?

The offseason is honestly the best a baseball game has ever seen. It's gotten to the point where I just sim the regular season and if I make the playoffs I'll play them, then do the front office post season work. The free agency on Xbox/PS2 can have too many big names in it from time to time but on the PC it's great. As far as the CPU addressing needs, I really can't say. I've never really paid attention to this.

            3) Are the stats realistic?

Pretty good I'd say. I just simmed 2006 and there wasn't a single player who hit over 48 homers. There may be a few too many people hitting over .300 but nothing outrageous, plus you get a variety of results. I've simmed 2006 five times now and both individual stats and team standings have varied quite a bit.

            4) Does the cpu call up minor leaguers to replace a struggling player? Do they bring guys up to fill an injury spot then send the players back once the injured player comes back?

Honestly I haven't paid attention to this.

            5) does the schedule change each year? Does the interleague games change each year?

            Yup.

Another question. How are trades on here? Do teams dump players when they are out of the chase so that they can get more money to go after big time free agents the next season? Also do teams in the chase go after needs to help them in their pennant chase?

In the Xbox/PS2 version I noticed that the CPU will mostly offer prospects for prospects with the occasional minor leaguer. On the PC with all the mods I noticed a great deal more that the CPU attempts to trade major leaguers, which is definitely nice to see. I haven't noticed teams that are out of the race "dumping" players, and the only time I see teams address a need is if it's due to an injury. EI: if Giambi his hitting .220 with 10 homers in July the CPU won't go out and get a new 1B.

As far as gameplay I'd implement Dowie's and Nasa's all star AND mvp sliders found in this site under sliders. They are both getting good reviews regardless which of the 2 levels you play on.

If your ultimate question is whether or not you should get this game, the answer is a definite YES.

                    Re: questions about mvp

                    My ultimate question actually is:

Is this game better on and off the field compared to ASB 05? Is it as realistic on and off the field?

So if anyone has played both ASB 05 and MVP 05 I would like to hear feedback from you.

There's a rotation of 6 different schedules. Every possible interleague matchup (home and away) occurs within each 6-year span. Also, the All-Star Game venue changes every year, and you'll see all 30 stadiums host an All-Star Game if you play long enough.

Let me put it this way. I picked this game up used for Xbox for $10. Since that time I have played through two full 162 game seasons. I think I got my money worth. What do you have to lose?

One thing some people might not comment on is that after the first season in dynasty mode all of the other teams only carry 1 or 2 true relief pitchers on the roster. The other 9 or 10 pitchers are always starting pitchers. Aside from the initial "Well that kinda sucks" it actually hasn't made that big of a difference. Something else I noticed is that the rookies the game generates seem to more or less all have the same bland hitting zones. They are mostly all white with the two or more of the corners blue and maybe the middle of the strike zone as red.

Hitting zones dont seem to matter at all anyway, though. I hadnt really noticed the relief pitcher thing. What I dont like is that my minor league teams are all setup with all the SP in AAA and the RP below that.

If youre considering buying the game, I would definitely go ahead. Theres really not much to lose. Be sure you can get an updated rosters, though.
