    Just Ordered This Game

I've been more of a basketball and football guy than a baseball guy in both real life and sports video games. However, I have always been curious about playing this game since it came out in 2005. So when I saw it on gamestop for about $5 I sent off for it.

Anyway, the main questions I have about this game is the dynasty mode. Dynasty mode is the main and pretty much only reason I play sports video games. I just enjoy the feeling of building a team from the ground up particulary through the draft. So my main questions are:

    1. Is there anything in dynasty mode that resembles the MLB Amateur draft?

    2. If so at what point in the dynasty mode does the draft occur and how does it work? How many rounds, can you scout players that you would like to draft, etc.

    3. I've read many posts about the player progression being not good. Is it really that bad?

    4. How does MVP 05's dynasty mode compare to that of other baseball games like 2k7 and MLB The Show? Is it better or worse?

If anyone could answer these question I would greatly appreciate it. Who knows, maybe by playing this game I will become more of a baseball guy.

    1. Yes.

    2. It occurs at the offeseason menu. It's really not that good at all. No active scouting. A couple generic comments at the top of the page on the player in question. 10 rounds, in inverted order of previous season's finish. Not available until you've completed the first season in dynasty (Spring training n/a as well until start of season 2).

    3. If you play rookies and young players in ST games in year 2 (not sim through), you can get some nice bumps in progression. Biggest problem is real-life vets retiring en mass, when in real life you know they're not even close to being washed up. So by year 4 or 5, you've got a weird mix of totally fictional guys, many more than you should have, which kind of cheapens the experience. There's no real logic to retirements. "Personal" comes up far too often as a reason for solid vets retiring at young ages.

    4. Don't have PS2, so I haven't played The Show. 2K7 seemed to have a decent dynasty engine, but the gameplay IMO can't compare to MVP 05, which is why I still play it 3 years later.

Great thing about dynasty in MVP 05 is that you can trade (with cpu trades and fair trading both turned to "off") players amongst any 2 teams, not just the team you control. So you can concieivably update all rosters to reflect real life tranasactions as you go -- though it would be a lot of work to make 05 reflect 07 at this point, and some vets (like Clemens and 'Jon Dowd', who is Barry Bonds) always seem to retire before you ever make it to '07...

Hope this helps. If you're a games player, MVP is the way to go. If you're a simmer, I actually recommend All-Star Baseball '05 for XBox. Waivers, Rule 5, complete amateur draft with futures game at the All-Star break. Best dynasty engine ever.

Thanks that information really helped alot. I don't have an Xbox, but if I get one I'll check out All Star Baseball 05.
