What is "variable stuff" and "MVP fielding"?

we have decided that variable stuff means that somedays your pitcher will just stink and there isn't really anything you can do about that. I don't know if I have ever encountered this. I did have John Smoltz get whacked for 9 runs in 3 innings in one game, but that is the only instance that I saw for variable stuff.

As for MVP fielding, if you notice when the ball is hit to the outfield, the computer will automatically start moving you to the right spot. If you turn on MVP fielding then the computer won't help you at all.

I had an instance where my all star pitcher Halladay, went into the game with half his stamina gone. I had to pull him after 5 innings. Im assuming this is the variable stuff working. This is after he had a 4 day rest btw.
