Will this ever happen again?
Ok I was watching bits and pieces of the Dodgers/Braves game on Sunday (BTW I hate the renovations to Chavez Ravine. They took out my favourite backstop background and now it looks like any other park. I miss the guy with hat and radar gun!) and the announcers were talking about the Dodgers' run of 5 straight ROTYs. This got me thinking, in this day and age will there ever be another organizational feat like that again?16yes0%6no0%10Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

No I doubt it will. There are too many things that get in the way. You have to first have great scouts, consistantly draft well, be able to actually sign your picks (which is proving to be tougher and tougher as time goes), most likely consistantly have a poor team so that your picks can have a spot on the roster and be in a spot to pick the suposedly more talented players, although that is really a crapshoot. Lastly, you have to have plain dumb luck to have a string of great players like that. -

The way teams today basically just use their farm systems for trade bait it's doubtfull that it will happen again. Teams seem to bring up multiple prospects at a time, for example: had Florida brought up Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera a year apart chances are they both would have won the ROY award, instead they brought them up early in the same season.
Also, as Bergie56 said you have to have dumb luck to have 5 straight ROY's, the Dodgers and the A's have both had 3 straight before, so 5 is almost unheard of.
It can also be said that 1995 was questionable. Chipper Jones (.265, 23 HR, 86 RBI) could easily have won the 1995 NL ROY award over Hideo Nomo (13-6 2.54 ERA) who was already a veteran of the Japanese League (Thats a whole other argument).
If it were to happen again it would have to be a team like the A's or the Twins who actually use their farm system to develope players for their teams instead of trading them away.Comment

Re: Will this ever happen again?
No...because most rookies don't pan out.
I think there was a big issue on whether or not Japanese players could play, that's why it was such a huge thing for guys like Nomo and Ichiro to make an impact. During the time a lot of people thought that Japanese baseball was no better than AA or AAA baseball. Now people realize that Japanese baseball players are just as capable of a lot of domestic and international players. I think you still have to say that a person that have never played a full season in the Majors qualifies for RoY consideration, no matter their age.Comment

Re: Will this ever happen again?
I doubt it will. The Dodgers winning was more luck than anything. It's not like they drafted Piazza with the expectation that he'd be a Hall of Fame catcher.Comment

I could see the A's and possibly Braves doing so.The Braves are gonna have to bring up some of their young guys soon like Marte and Francoeur and they have one of the best farm systems in baseball.I wouldn't hold it past the Braves or A's.Comment
