    Dernell Stenson

Not sure how many people know about this, but Stenson was murdered in November of 2003 and was considered the Red Sox top prospect in 2001 before being claimed off waivers from the Reds. It happened about a year and a half ago, but I just heard about it for the first time. Very sad story.

Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was shot execution-style, with his hands and feet bound, sources familar to the police investigation told the East Valley (Ariz.) Tribune Friday.

Stenson's hands were bound with plastic handcuffs and his feet were tied together with shoelaces, sources told the newspaper.

Stenson, who had been playing in the Arizona Fall League, was found dead Wednesday in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler. He had been shot and run over and apparently dragged by his own SUV.
An ex-girlfriend who made death threats to Dernell Stenson is being investigated by authorities who are trying to determine whether she had any role in Stenson's death, the Arizona Republic is reporting.

According to the newspaper, two weeks before Stenson was kidnapped and murdered, the Cincinnati Reds outfielder told Scottsdale, Ariz., police that the ex-girlfriend had sent a death threat by text message to his cellphone: "U better pray I never see you U again. I swear Dernell U R worth a Murder charge 4 & that is all U R worth."

Yeah, I remember when this went down. I was at the game the season before when Stenson hit his first HR as a Red, I believe. Sounds like he was well-liked by his teammates. Such a shame something that senseless had to happen to a good kid.

Yeah when this first went down, I was sick to my stomach after hearing it. It was a horrible death he had to endure. One of the saddest stories in sports that I can remember.
