Pete Rose vs Tony Gwynn. Who's the better hitter?
What's surprising is that even if Tony played up till he was 45(like Rose) and averged 157 hits a season he still would have not surpassed the 4000 hit total. But that .338 career batting average is nothing to sneeze at. Rose should be in the Hall and if Gwynn doesn't get in on first ballot everybody on the Hall committee needs to be shot.
Let the debate begin.43Tony Gwynn0%26Pete Rose0%17I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XTags: None -

Re: Pete Rose vs Tony Gwynn. Who's the better hitter?
This is tough
Gwynn had a great eye but he got bogged down by some injuries late in his career. If he had remained slim like in his earlier years he might've had more longevity, then again he DID have a very long career.
Pet Rose was a man with unbridled passion for the game. He played hard whether it was a blowout or close game. Considering all that it's amazing the man didn't have any kind of serious injuries.
Then again his off the field stuff puts him down a notch or two.
I'd have to say Rose but only very slightly ahead of Gwynn.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Yes I know that but sometimes hitters give up during blowouts. Sure they don't really want to make an out but they don't always give 100% at the plate.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I mean, I can see what your saying as it applies to playing the field or running the bases but at the plate?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Pete Rose vs Tony Gwynn. Who's the better hitter?
Just to put a few things in perspective
-Gwynn hit .300 or better 19 consecutive seasons (national league record)
-from 1993 to 1997 Gwynn hit .350 or better every year including .394 in 1994. Only 3 other players have ever hit more than .350 more consecutive years (Hornsby, Simmons, Cobb)
- In 10,300+ plate apperances he struck out only 434 times.
- Tied NL record with 8 batting titles. Only player to win 4 batting titles in 2 different decades.
- Hit .351 with runners in scoring position and over his last 6 years hit .390 with RISP.
- He also won 5 Gold Gloves
I could go on and on, what he did is staggering, and imo, is by far the best pure hitter of my generation.Comment
