Devil Rays Drop Alex Sanchez, Charles Johnson

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- More than two months after violating Major League Baseball's policy on steroids, outfielder Alex Sanchez was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <!---------------------INLINE MINI-PLAYER CARD ENDS HERE--------------------> Sanchez hit .346 this season and went 2-for-6 with two runs scored in the Devil Rays' 7-5 victory at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

But the Devil Rays designated Sanchez for assignment on Monday, giving them 10 days to trade, release or ask waivers on the outfielder.

Tampa Bay also released veteran catcher Charles Johnson, who was batting just .196, and placed pitcher Trever Miller on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain Monday.

To fill the three roster spots, the Devil Rays recalled outfielder Jonny Gomes and catcher Kevin Cash from Triple-A Durham and selected the contract of right-hander Tim Corcoran from Durham.

The moves come one day after Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella criticized ownership for not caring about winning now. Tampa Bay has baseball's worst record at 21-42.

Sanchez is your best hitter and you drop him, this is why the D-Rays don't win

wow, going by avg you claim him to be the 'best hitter'? He has half the number of at bats at only 133. Crawford is easily the best player on the team. The reason the D-Rays don't win has nothing to do with Sanchez really.. How about the fact they have the lowest payroll in the league by far?!

dude take a chill pill, I was saying they don't win because they cut players who can help the team not ones that hurt them. Dude you really need to chill, I know Crawford is the best player I was just saying you shouldn't cut someone that is much better than Reggie Taylor sorry my opinion differs from yours... grow up.

I dunno what you saw in my post, but I wasn't even angry. I was just pointing out that the Tampa Bay front office is quite stingy and they deserve to be in last place with a payroll of only 29million. They aren't even building up their farm system taking some kid who who sign for very low in the draft. Don't take any of these posts the wrong way.

Is Sanchez that bad in the field? I've never gotten much of a chance to watch him. I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees attempted to sign him. They need a young outfielder pretty badly and Sanchez could potentially bat lead-off. The problem is, unless the Yankees were to guarantee him a starting role he probably wouldn't sign. The Braves might have some use for him.

The Giants could be a possibility with Marquis Grissom going back on the D.L.

I don't believe Sanchez meets the minimum age requirements to become a Giant.

Please god get some new Ownership in Tampa Bay or get that team out of the league. They are a joke Franchise and will always be the doormat of the AL East.

It's been a wild ride for Sanchez this year. He finally reunited with his family after they fled Cuba, then he's traded, then he plays for the Devil Rays (that totally sucks), and now he's released from them.

He's still a pretty decent player. I mean, speed and contact are important to baseball. Someone will pick him up.

He was released b/c he wanted to start and he wasn't going to get that with TB. They want to play Gomes, and eventually Baldelli or Delmon Young. They have a crowded outfield, he needed to go somewhere where he can get signficant playing time.
