    Gagne Lands On DL; Season Over?

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Los Angeles Dodgers closer Eric Gagne went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, much like the injury that sidelined him for the first 35 games of the season.

    <!--------------------------START PLAYER CARD------------------>

    <!---------------------INLINE MINI-PLAYER CARD ENDS HERE--------------------> Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said Tuesday that Gagne aggravated the elbow Sunday night while pitching against Minnesota.

    The Los Angeles Times reported that Gagne has a partial tear of the elbow ligament and might need season-ending surgery.

    Gagne, who owns the major league record of 84 consecutive saves, landed on the disabled list for the first time in his seven-year major league career on April 1 when he hurt his elbow, possibly while compensating for a knee injury sustained during spring training. It was the same elbow that underwent ligament replacement surgery in 1997.

    After returning on May 14, the right-hander was 1-0 with eight saves and a 2.70 ERA in 13 1-3 innings.

    Gagne won the NL Cy Young Award in 2003 with a club-record 55 saves and 1.20 ERA. He agreed to a two-year, $19-million contract in the offseason after recording 152 saves and averaging 122 strikeouts during his first three seasons as a closer.

    It's being reported that he may need Tommy John surgery if the ligament is torn. If that is the case then he'll miss the rest of this season and likely all of next season.

        This is the ultimate year for closers struggling or going down.. Don't remember a season like this ever before

          I think this is the unfortunate result of Gagne being overworked the last few seasons. Prior to this season Gagne had pitched 247 innings over the last 3 seasons, in that time Gagne had pitched 20.1 more innings than John Smoltz (144 saves) and 52.1 more innings than Mariano Rivera (121 saves), the 2nd and 3rd best closers behind Gagne.

          Without Gagne and a shaky rotation i wonder how long the Dodgers will be able to stay in the N.L. West race.

            I don't know if it's going to be all that bad. Brazoban did pretty good when Gagne was hurt earlier in the year. I have no reason to believe that he won't do just as good or better now that he will definately be the closer for a while.

                Brazoban isn't that much of a drop off to one of the best closers of all time? I wouldn't go that far but I don't think the Dodgers are going to be too bad without Gagne.

                  I never said that Brazoban was as good as Gagne, he's not even in the same league. All I said was that the Dodgers won't be as bad off as all of yall are making them out to be. I think that they will okay, and they will cope.

                    I think he was saying that since Brazoban will be the full time closer now, and he did well earlier, he doesn't see him dropping off from where he was earlier in the season because he knows the job is his.

                    I think everybody knows that no one can truly replace Gagne.

                        I don't think I'd go that far as to qualify Gagne as one of the best of all time. Good closer, but let's wait until he's got more than 152 saves before putting him in the upper level of closers.
