    Article On Todd Helton

It was in the paper this morning, and I found it pretty interesting. Helton is probably my favorite non-Yankee in the entire league. He's always hit for a great average and big numbers. They made a great point that maybe all this losing has finally gotten to him.

Obviously I don't believe he ever did take steroids but I'm kind of surprised nobody has mentioned that in the media considering what a drop off he's had. I know how the media likes to start things.

I'd personally like to see him get traded to a team in contention, and I hope he can start performing like he is capable of real soon.

...It is necessary to compare the last 11 weeks to the previous eight years to understand the slide's depth and historical perspective.

Three of Helton's eight worst offensive months have occurred this season. He never had hit under .300 in back-to-back months. He hasn't reached .300 in any month this season, sitting at .235 in June.

Everybody from season ticket-holders to diehard bloggers are asking the question: What's wrong with Helton?

"I have had bad days at work just like anybody else. I am no different," said Helton, 31. "I am going to get out of this through hard work. That's the only way I know how."

Of the telling statistics, nothing stands out more than Helton's average against left-handers. He had hit them at a .316 career clip. This year, he sits at .149....

I never accused him of juicing, but I've accused the ballpark of attaining juiced offensive statistics.

Helton is a great hitter, no doubt. However, his SLG% numbers are greatly increased because of the park. If he does get traded, he will still be a great average hitter, and have a high OPS... but this can mean a 25% decrease in home run numbers if he does.

It's not just him, it's every Rockies player.

The reason for his drop right now? I have no clue, but it's not because he is now off something that he was on before... because he never was on anything.

Helton has always been a class guy, and a great all-around ballplayer. In spite of the fact he's hit .295 with a SLG% at around .515 on the road people have always given him flack about being a Coors Field creation. I remember him playing in a home-run derby and all the announcers making fun of him... "not like hitting in Coors is it Todd"... as if he CHOSE to be a Rockie... it always made me sick. I could only imagine how disheartening it is for all of your accomplishments to be examined and criticized... and doubted. And he's always been a sport about it. I too hope he gets traded and makes a run at a batting title, in fact, there aren't many people that I root for as much as Todd.

But it's the lefty thing that makes me think it's a mechanical problem. That's a SEVERE drop in productivity.

The Rockies really need to trade him.

I think he'd do nicely in Fenway....
