    Dear Mr. Steinbrenner

Below is my general response to George Steinbrenner regarding the general unhappiness he expressed towards his team...Mind you, I am not a Yankee fan, and this has little to do with supporting his players, however talented they may be.

Below you will find three lineups used by the NYY in the 1997-1999 World Series. These lists should be viewed in relation to the present lineup. With that in mind, a stark difference is noticed, primarily in the differences between "Then" and "Now" players found tabulated on the backs of baseball cards bearing their inidvidual names...those crazy big numbers, not to mention their salaries, or their chances at HallOfFame candidacy. Chili Davis; HOF, anyone? Paging Scott Brosious...Mr. Brosious?

While Steinbrenner will never play in a game--that is the players' job, and it is fully theirs' to execute--surely we can say that he has, it seems, himself to blame, & perhaps Cashman, from a managerial standpoint. The front office refuses to believe (or is it "remember"?) that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts...A team staffed with "lower-quality" players achieved with some appearance of ease to win 3 consecutive WS; while this brilliant lineup is being lauded for a 2-game winning streak...

I have included nothing on the pitching staff, essentially because it has always been rather well-cast; though this year's performance still alludes to problems in the "buy-them-all" or "pokemon" style of management that has garnered them resentment, and lately, sub-par performance...George Steinbrenner, this is your fault for refusing to build a team, expecting pieces to fall and fit into place regardless of composition. This is the sort of shotty oversight that led the NYMets into those horrible years, buying players at high prices every year with littly return...good luck, Alex and Gary; good luck, Pedro and Carlos.

It's interesting, the Yanks' great success in those years were also due in no small part to building a team through the farm system and you know what? Steinbrenner wasn't in charge in those years when they built up the farm. I believe he was banned from baseball for 5 yrs or so.

maybe they need to kick George out again? LOL

yes - good ol Steinny there messed up his team.. back in the mid to late 90's, they had a "team".. no one cared about stats, it was about the winning & the rings that went with it.. Brosious(sp), O'Neil, Tino,Jeter... the list goes on.. nowadays, it seems as if Steinbrenner wants the "All-Star team".. he almost has an All star at each position - they just arent a great "team- team" (if that makes sense).. there is really no "heart & sole" to this team (really only would be Jeter).. plus too, he has a pitching staff that is OK, not great (RJ is 41, Pavano really only had one good year & Moose is ok)..

Yeah, what Sportsman said. The majority of the guys on those teams were either drafted or traded for guys that were drafted by the Yanks while Steinbrenner was banned. That was when Gene Michael was making all of the decisions for us and I along with all Yankee fans are desperately waiting for the day Steinbrenner steps down and lets newly appointed successor Swindall (sp?) take over. He has already said he'd be more hands off and listen to the baseball people more than Boss has.

Exactly, it was a "team" back then...not a bunch of superstars thrown together.

What you also forgot to mention, was the players coming off the bench in the clutch. They may not have been big names but when they entered the game, they contributed.
