Kenny Rogers - out of control

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers shoved two cameramen Wednesday, sending one to the hospital in a videotaped tirade that included throwing a camera to the ground and threatening to break others.

Rogers, who missed his last start for the struggling Rangers with a broken pinky caused by another outburst earlier this month, erupted at the cameramen as they filmed him walking to the field for pregame stretching before Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels.

The 40-year-old left-hander first shoved Fox Sports Net Southwest photographer David Mammeli, telling him: ``I told you to get those cameras out of my face.''

Rogers then approached a second cameraman. He wrestled the camera from Larry Rodriguez of Dallas-Fort Worth television station KDFW, threw it to the ground and kicked it.

The 6 foot 1, 210-pound pitcher saw two other cameramen who were recording from the Rangers' dugout and walked toward them. He did not make contact with the men, who were backing away.

``I'll break every ... one of them,'' Rogers said before he was escorted to the clubhouse by catcher Rod Barajas.

The Rangers sent Rogers home about an hour later.

KDFW news director Maria Barrs said paramedics took Rodriguez to an Arlington hospital late Wednesday to be checked out.

``He does have quite a bit of pain, in his shoulder and his arm and his leg,'' Barrs said.

Footage shot by Dallas-Fort Worth station KTVT shows Rogers pushing Rodriguez's camera, which goes over the photographer's head and falls to the ground. As Rodriguez puts the camera back on his shoulder, Rogers approaches again, pushing the lens away and having words with the photographer.

As players begin to intervene, Rogers pulls the camera to the ground and kicks it before walking away.

Fox Sports Net Souhwest spokesman Ramon Alvarez had no information on whether Mammeli had been injured.

Rangers manager Buck Showalter, who did not witness the events, said the team will investigate.

``It's not something we'll take lightly,'' Showalter said. ``When I have all the facts, I'll deal with it.''

No offense, but that's probably the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Kenny Rogers' personality. The guy just looks like one of those ignorant, easy to rile up type of guys.

Re: Kenny Rogers - out of control

Rogers definitely showed his arse but the laughable part of this story is that the news station that employed the cameraman issued a statement that he was being checked out at the hospital suffering from "significant pain in his shoulder, arm, and leg".

I think my mom has slapped me harder than Kenny Rogers flipping the camera off that guy's shoulder.

Re: Kenny Rogers - out of control

I can offer a unique perspective here having covered the Rangers on many occassions during the early to mid 90s for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

First off, Larry Rodriguez has a long history of neck and shoulder problems. He's a good cameraman, but hauling those cameras around (which used to be a lot heavier, but still are) has caused him medical problems that he's been treated for on other occassions. PLUS, when you push a camera back on a guy who has his eye up to the view finder, it causes a signficant jolt on your neck.

Rogers has done this stuff before. I was in the clubhouse when Rogers picked up reporter Simon Gonzales about 10 years ago and carried him out of the room and slammed the door on him. It humiliated Gonzalez, who had criticized Rogers previous outing in some way.

I believe Rogers is pissed because:

                    1. A couple of years ago, Rogers balked at a 2-year, $10 million offer from the Rangers, who were spooked away and signed other pitchers. Rogers settled for 1 year and $1 million from Minnesota. Rafael Palmeiro, Rogers' best friend in the world, made a similar mistake here, which brought Will Clark to the Rangers to Palmeiro's outrage.

                    2. Rogers signed a 2-year contract before last year when his value was down. After a good season last year, he wanted an extension. His agent is SCOTT BORAS, whom the Rangers don't particularly like to deal with after the A-Rod negotiations.

                    3. Boras' contract with his clients give him all power. Players sign on that they have to let him find the best deal, and if they break that clause, they have to pay Boras a significantly higher percentage of the contract value. Rogers is stuck.

                    4. The Rangers released Ryan Drese, Rogers' best buddy on the team. Rogers reportedly was the first to storm into Showalter's office afterward.

And now the big one, I think.....

                    5. Rogers begged out of a start two days ago after the medical staff gave him medical clearance to play with a broken bone in his non-throwing hand. The Rangers desperately needed him after losing 4 consecutive games to the team they're chasing. The Rangers lost that night, dropping to 8 1/2 games back after being tied with the Angels just two weeks ago.

Something tells me a pretty heated exchange has occurred between Rogers and Showalter/organization yesterday that was something to the effect of "why do you think we're going to re-up you now when we can't count on you to take the ball as our ace when we really need you."

Rogers appeared in a sour mood when he hit the field, and breaking cameras was where he chose to vent that anger.

Rogers is a fine pitcher when little is on the line, as well as a supreme idiot in general and a choke artist when the pressure gets notched up a bit.

The Rangers should let this calm down for a month, then trade this sorry a-hole for a sack of fishing lures.

I agree... I remember he couldn't find the plate for the Mets when the stakes were high.

It looks like he needs to go to anger management classes. There is no need for behavior like that.

I heard a reporter from Dallas on the Dan Patrick show saying that there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on with Kenny and the Rangers. He said there was a Rangers rep going around press row saying that Rogers basically wussed out and didn't want to pitch against the Angels, that he wanted to pitch against the Red Sox. Basically it was a ploy to make the Rangers look good in the event they trade him or get rid of him, as opposed to giving him the contract he wants.

Still no excuse... I'd have loved to seen the cameraman beat him upside the head with his camera.
