Will Cordero Break Bobby Thigpen's Save Record?

I figured I'd add a new question for the week....

Do you think Chad Cordero, who has 28 saves through 78 games, will pass Bobby Thigpen's save record of 57, set in 1990?

At his current pace, he'd tie with Thigpen. Obviously it comes down to if the Nats are for real or not. Will hey continue to win, or die off come August? When Thigpen got 57 saves (also going 4-6), the White Sox went 94-68

Personally, I think he will. That may be a reach to some of you, but like I've said before, the Nationals are for real.

    Cordero's 2005 Stats:
    41.1 Innings Pitched
    0.88 ERA
    28 Saves
    38 Strikeouts
    2 Blown Saves

No, I think he'll blow a couple games or so. The Nats are playing well above their heads right now. The team is only this good so far because the pitching has been lights out. They don't have much of an offense but that can change as RFK is supposed to be a launching pad during the heat of the summer months.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say YES. The Nats are 16 games over .500 despite being outscored this season. This means they're in a lot of close games and are winning a lot of close games. If that trend continues he should break the record.

There are some factors working against him though. If they continue to win and wrap up the division too early, he may not get as many shots late in the year. The Nats might also have a tough time keeping up their winning ways.

I'll stick with my yes answer though, since I know everybody else will say no.

Something else that is interesting about the Nats...they've actually been OUTSCORED despite having the 4th best record in baseball.

        Runs Scored : 322
        Runs Allowed : 324

I don't think he'll be around 50 saves, but he won't get to 57 unfortunately. I really like what the Nationals are doing....

He's certainly got a chance, and if he can put up another 1 or 2 months like this month than I think he will break it.

No, but it's not going to be his fault. Fortunately, the Nationals have many wins within 3 runs or less, but I don't believe they are going to have enough wins/chances for him to get those saves. I think that right now, they are in fact pretenders. Not pretenders as in they should be under .500, but I think that they are playing top-notch baseball now, and the Braves have yet to do that.

If he gets the chances, however, he will succeed.

The low-scoring game that the Nationals play will eventually bite them in the butt. Yes, the defense and pitching has been stellar, if not better than stellar. I just don't think they can hold 20 more 1-run wins down the road.

40-45 saves, highly probable for Cordero with his stuff. 50+, unlikely. Unless the Nationals puts up 95-100 wins. I've got Washington at only 85 or lower this season.

IF the Nationals are able to get another starter to take the load off of Livan Hernandez or if Loaiza or Drese step it up and help win more games THEN i think Cordero has at least a chance at Thigpen. Randy Myers saved 53 games in '93 with a Cubs team that on paper is not as good as the Nationals, and to me Cordero has better stuff.

It will be interesting to watch.

Got his 29th yesterday, but blew a chance for his 30th today with 2 earned runs in the 9th.

                        No he won't do it.

Despite how good the Nationals have done, I don't think they are going to have nearly as many means in the 2nd half.

And even if they continue their current pace, they will probably go easy on his arm, he is the future.

To the contrary of what people think, I believe the fact that the Nats play so many close ball games, gives him more opportunities to get saves. Less blowouts, or 4 runs or more type leads will be rare, thus giving Chad ample opportunities to pile Save after Save for the Nats.
