Re: Best Sox stat this year.
Possibly the funniest quote ever...
``This is tough, because we feel like we are the better team,'' Craig Monroe said. ``But being the best team on paper doesn't mean anything. They came in here and did everything they needed to do, and that's hard to accept.''
What the hell paper is Craig Monroe looking at?Michigan WolverinesChicago White Sox -

refresh my memory on who Craig Monroe is?“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Re: Best Sox stat this year.
Well, the AL Central the last few years is notorious for being one of (if not THE) weakest in all of baseball. Obviously the Indians and Tigers are better this year, but every team in that division isn't really "battle-tested".
Bottom line: until the White Sox actually win something in the post-season, I really don't think White Sox fans should be looking down on anybody else. Most of the country doesn't really focus in on how astoundingly poor the White Sox have fared in their history. Part of the reason is: people across the country don't care about the White Sox. They don't even come close to the national fanbase that the Red Sox and Cubs have, which, if you think about it, is pretty sad.Comment

Where the hell did that come from? Who was "looking down on anyone else?" It was a stat I thought was interesting. As a Sox fan I really don't want the focus of the team to be on how "poor" they have been. The Cubs can have that lovable loser connotation. I don't want it.
And as for your Cubs and Red Sox comment? Meh.. Call me up when the WS is decided by attendence.
And lastly...you HAVE to think that Monroe comment is hilarious. Thinking they are better than a team 16 games ahead of them?
and edit = You are from Boston so I will assume you are a Red Sox fan. What is really sad in this situation is that you are telling me not to look down on anybody and lecturing me on the Chicago White Sox. Other than last year you have been the Yankees bitch year and year out, just because you won one doesn't give you the "royal right" to tell other fans how to act.Last edited by soltrain; 06-30-2005, 11:15 PM.Michigan WolverinesChicago White SoxComment

Re: Best Sox stat this year.
No, I don't think it's hilarious.
I don't think it's at all uncharacteristic for athletes to believe they are the best at what they do. After all, MLB ballplayers are the best of the best in the entire world. Even the 25th men on most rosters are pretty talented and solid athletes. Throughout most of their lives, it has been reinforced within them that they are the best, especially the athletic ones.
Even on the worst teams, the players are the cream of the crop compared to the flotsam around the minor leagues and the international league (And even they are pretty talented). I don't find it unreasonable or hilarious that Craig Monroe, a starting outfielder for an MLB team, believed his team was better than their opponent, regardless of the opponent's position in the standings.
As for my "proving themselves" point, the White Sox have been good for 1/2 of a season. They are not the 1996-1999 NY Yankees. They are not the 1927 Yankees, nor the 1975 Reds. I have no problem admitting they have been very good for half a season. I will not admit that they should create a feeling of fear in their opposition, or even worse, a feeling of not having the ability to win.Comment

And that stuff about the cubs and the red sox.... sorry everyone doesnt base their alliegence to the current flavor of the month team... it is anything but an insult to be not as "good" as the cubs fans, who fill wrigley every day with some of the most idiotic people to ever watch a major league game
by record alone, the AL central is the second toughest division in the majors. Keep watching baseball tonight and thinking the major leagues bow down to the east coast buddy
The red sox win last year and suddenly the (real) sox are **** because they havent won a world series since 1917? ok buddy
PS. that cubs, red sox circle **** over at wrigley the other week was apalling
Signs all over "Welcome Red Sox Fans!" "If the red sox can win so can we!" it was enough to make me pukeLast edited by Bears_16_and_0; 07-01-2005, 12:27 AM.Comment
