Re: Bret Boone designated for assignment

Boone has always been an above average fielder but there were rumors of his steroid use/abuse. I could see the Yankees going after him and it would immediately improve their defense up the middle. The bad part about that would be Steinbrenner's shortsightedness would allow him to push Cano into a deal for CF or SP.....and that would be bad.

There have been rumours that Cano and Wang would be dangled as trade bait. If Steinbrenner actually forces Cashman to do this then the Yanks are in more trouble then I previously thought.

Boone had an amazing 2001 season and was one of the top defenders in the game.

That being said, he's 36 and 2nd basemen just fall off the map for whatever reason around this age...see Robby Alomar.

This was a surprise, hopefully they can get something for him.

Bingo. Boone bulked up very quickly. He was always an average power hitter for a 2B (high of 24 in 1998) and then before 2001 he showed up at camp HUGE. That year he jacked 37 HR's. The next 3 years he had 24, 35 and 24. All surpassing or tying his pre-2001 high.

I read a story a while back where some players on Seattle were shocked when Boone showed up for spring training before the 2001 season. They couldn't believe how big he got.

Cano is not getting traded. I don't even know if Boone would be a defensive upgrade over Cano. And he'd be a drastic push in the wrong direction at the plate. Cano really is starting to play some very good ball lately.

Hit safely in 18 outta 19 games, is up to .295 now I believe. He may end up being the ROY.

I just don't see how the Yankees can trade away one of their top prospects for a struggling guy who don't have many years left. It would be a bad decision if Steinbrenner does make it.

Right now, the Yankees need to bolster their horrid pitching... their infield is fine.

I saw clips of his media scrum and he started to cry.

Even though Boone is on his last leg, he loved the city of Seattle and was popular among his teammates and fans. If he comes back to Safeco I know he'll get a standing ovation.

No one said Cano would be traded for Boone. The Mariners would likely take a sack of potatoes for Boone by now. If he has been designated for assignment then that means he has been shopped around more than once by Seattle.

What it does mean is that the Yankees could give up a marginal prospect for Boone which would then (in Steinbrenner's eyes) free up Cano to be part of a trade to acquire a CF or SP.

Actually, their infield sucks. They have a below average defensive shortstop, an average defensive rookie at second, and Giambi at first (no need to throw in an adjective when you say Giambi and first base together). The only star on the defensive side of the infield is Alex Rodriguez (who by the way helped Jeter win a Gold Glove last year). Even Posada is a liability at the 2.

Bernie is weak at centerfield. Matsui can't play center. Sheffield only has an arm, but no legs. Womack is a liability on the field, period.

The rumor of Sheffield going to the Mets for Camron surfaced for one reason and one reason only. "Defense wins championships" and the team that won a championship last year not only was named the Boston Red Sox, but also traded an All-Star shortstop for weak hitting infielders with above average defensive ability (Mentkiewicz and Cabrera). Immediately after that trade the Red Sox went on a surge and in case anyone forgot, the Yankees pitching and defense was the reason why they blew the last four games against the Sox last year.

In fact, the Yankees have struggled this year because of defense. The Yanks are third in runs scored in the MAJORS, sixth in homeruns. They don't need any help on offense.

                        Just a season too late.

Should of traded Boone at mid-season in 2004.

The Boone crying bit was great unintentional comedy.

                          Re: Cano and Boone -

Every year I see Yankee fans continue to hype their own prospects to levels unimaginable. Remember Jorge DePaula? Brandon Claussen? Navarro? All these average/mediocre players got hyped up as the second coming of Christ in Yankees fans desperate search of rationalizing their crazy trade proposals. The same seems to be happening again this year with Robinson Cano and Wang. Most fanbases tend to do this (Hanley Ramirez), but it reaches ridiculous levels with NY Yankees fans.

If Robinson Cano is the top NY Yankee prospect, you know the Yankees have a weak farm system. Cano is a solid player, but certainly no blue chipper or future all star. He's never posted jaw dropping numbers in the minors, just solid numbers (career high .356 OBP at AA Trenton), but nothing to really get a woody over.

The point is, if the right offer comes up for Cano, you move him. He's not a player you hold onto as a building block, he's a spare part. Ditto for Wang, who has been walking on water (3.29 K/9 !!) this year with his BABIP..

That all said, I wouldn't move Cano for Boone straight up at this point, as it seems like Boone has fallen off a cliff...

You're right. But, even if I were Kevin Malone I wouldn't move Cano for Boone. While Cano isn't the second coming of Christ, he's also not the anti-christ. The kid has talent to play in the league. But, Boone is just old and a huge liability.

Let me just be the first to mention to all those who asked "is Boone any good at defense?", have you been hiding under a rock? He's only been a gold glover like....I can't even remember how many times now, and just in the past 2 weeks he has made some awesome plays, proving he still has it in the field. Boone can't hit worth a damn anymore, whether ir be Sterroids or Age, they already have a Defensive whiz who can hit .230. His name is POKEY REESE. He makes about 3-4 mil LESS than Boone! So to this move I say, way to go M's! you're finally doing something mildly right! now to work on getting that pitching ERA somewhere under 4, seeing as how that's the only way you're going to play .500 baseball in the AL West! Sad to see Boone go, because he's become like one of the family, but then, so was Cirillo, and Cirillo just can't hit in Safeco. I'm beginning to think the freakin park is CURSED or something, everyone the M's get that was mildly good in the AL elsewhere just ends up SUCKING at Safeco. As for Beltre and Sexson, I think they are still getting used to the NL to AL change, and Sexson is coming back after an entire year off from baseball, something tells me he still doesn't have his fundamentals down. At best I expect him to hit .275 somewhere down the line in his contract with the M's, and Beltre should light up and hit .280 ball by the end of this season. All in all, I think the biggest problem the M's have is pitching. If Madritsch hadn'ta gotten hurt so early he probably would have found a groove and been like a staple for the M's. time to trade Piniero and put Sele in the BP or trade him also, because Sele is too streaky and Piniero has lost it and is falling off the same cliff as Boone. Meche is the only pitcher they have besides Bobby that shows ANY signs of Future Talent. When, oh, When will the Mariners catch a hint? Hell, I'd even settle for a hit. Even so, just like was said earlier, at this point they'd trade Boone for a bag of potatoes and like it. Anything is better than Boone. Give us a guy that hits a consistent .250-.260 and we'll be MORE than happy.

Best bet IMHO to take him is Boston, as they have the right climate:

                                1. big budget
                                2. small park that makes mediocre players look like gods
                                3. the need for a defensive 2nd basemen

as for that idiot that said Bellhorn was a good defensive 2B? What are you smoking? Boone is at least 3 times better, if not 4, and in Fenway he could hit 20-30 out and have a modest average.

I hope he goes to Fenway at least, because I want to see him have a better chance at hitting and if he does the M's have a better chance at getting some pitching help from Boston.
