I don't remember who it was, but someone during the 80's tried a different approach to this experiment. They carried 12 pitchers and the goal was to have 3 pitchers to pitch 3 innings each game. Everyone would pitch every 4-5 days. I can't remember for the life of me who tried it, but it only lasted about two weeks before they abandoned the idea.

I remember the Colorado Rockies doing this, but it wasn't in that time frame...“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

I was thinking it might have been Billy Martin with the A's in the early 80's when they didn't have a pitcher on the staff win 10 games, but I wasn't sure. I do remember LaRussa discussing it now that you mention it.- LETS GO RED SOX!!!

Re: Lou Pinella...just read it
The knock against Lou is that he's awful with handling young players, especially pitchers which makes him the worst guy to be in Tampa, as they have a lot of young talent. He's playing a 31 year old in Hollins over the 24 year old Gomes who's had a .900 OPS when he actually plays. I also remember a time last year when Kazmir was pitching spectaculr against the Red Sox, and Lou wanted him to hit a guy in retaliation, and what happened next? He hits another guy, this time on accident, and is thus thrown out of the game. Personally, after the whole Devil Ray- Red Sox fiasco earlier this year, I'm not a big fan of him.Comment

Casey Fossum - R - TB
After stating last night that Casey Fossum wouldn't start against the White Sox today but instead a reliever would start with Fossum entering later on, manager Lou Piniella did indeed start Casey Fossum tonight.
Liar, liar, pants on fire. Is Piniella actually trying to get fired? That would be a more plausible explanation than any of the reasoning he's given for the countless head-scratching moves the Devil Rays have made this season. Perhaps someone suggested that his latest ploy was a little too obvious, so Piniella nixed the idea. Either way, don't expect it to resurface. As far as the actual game goes, Fossum gave up 11 hits and seven runs -- six earned -- over six innings of work. Joe Beimel made his season-deubt when he replaced Fossum and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth. Jul. 6 - 11:14 pm et

yeah but I can blame him for wanting to be fired
If he wants out fine, turn in your resignation. But don't try and get fired so you can sit on the beach and collect your check at the same time.
I'm sure Lou isn't hurting for money so that shouldn't be a factor to him. I really question his character now that he's pulling this stuff.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. He wants to win as much as anyone ever has.
