I heard this was a possibility last year. That's a shame. When they did have Olympic baseball on TV (which was VERY rare) I enjoyed watching it. Looks like I'll be forced to watch Equestrian or Archery or Canoeing or one of the other great Olympic games...

I see they also cut Olympic Softball. I guess they got tired of the US winning every year. I think they had 40-50 straight wins as well? Whatever the case, Jennie Finch is hot!

I think this was in the works for awhile, but I'll just mindlessly blame the Russian and Chinese Olympic committees for paying off the IOC for getting rid of two sports the Americans tend to medal in.

BTW, what I said wasn't a shot at you, joeboo. This all actually crossed my mind when I first heard about it because of hearing a couple of weeks ago about the Russians and Chinese teaming to end US dominance at the games in 2008. Got a feeling those games might be more fixed than the 1988 Seoul Games. I'm actually scared for our athletes. The Chinese hate us. Lord knows what could happen.

Either I'm too tired and mindlessly reading this while wasting time at work or I never saw what you said as a shot at me. So no problem.

US dominance was already slipping in Athens. Though they were still leading in medals, China and Russia were right behind them.

It's a shame that there would be no more Olympic baseball. Unfrotunately, it has to cut in a time where teams are making a push for the playoffs and are reluctant to let their stars go. I would cry if golf is the replacement sport.

The main reason why softball is getting dropped is because the level of competition in the sport is a joke. There are probably only 2 or 3 teams in the world that are "good," and everyone else is awful. The fact that Team USA had a 0.13 ERA and a batting average around .340 just shows how uncompetitive softball was.

As for baseball, it's a little surprising that it got dumped, but I doubt that it was to spite the US. After all, our team didn't even qualify in 2004. Also, it's only been an official sport since '92, so it's not like there's a history of the sport in the Olympics.
