Is David Ortiz the new face of baseball?

With Ortiz getting the most votes for the All Star game this year, and Derek Jeter not even in the All Star game, I think this is a question worth thinking about. He's on the defending World Champs, he's a great team mate who always carries a smile on his face, is probably the most clutch hitter in baseball today, and is part of the ever growing latin presense in the MLB.

Do I think he is? No, but there could be a case made that he is the new face of baseball.

But just like Jeter's signature moment would be going in the hole and making that throw, when u think of Ortiz it is a helicopter swing mammoth homer. People don't remember the Babe for his defense man, he might as well as been a DH for all those things you think about when you think of him.

A-rod has been and always will be the face of baseball. Good looking, vastly rich, athletic, plays in NY for the biggest franchise in sports and mlb, and is on the path to breaking Hamerin Hank's record. Not to mention he plays side to side to Jeter.

I'm sorry but no ogre shrek-looking fat *** will ever will be the face of anything but a roll of toilet paper.

hell no. As much as I hate Jeter, I would always think him when I think baseball and 99.9% of America would as well compared to Ortiz. Plus Ortiz is ugly looking, he doesn't have the face to sell the sport.

He has a big nose, so he's Shrek? A-Rod wears makeup, everyone hates him and thinks he's a baby except NY fans.

If Ortiz isnt the face of baseball, he's deifnately the faceof the msot historic comeback in sports history I'll be content with that.

Jeter still represents the face of baseball to me.

The guy plays so hard, every single time, and the amount of effort he expels even on plays that are clearly "unwinnable" is a joy to watch.

I am amazed that he didn't make the All-Star team this year. He represents everything that is good in the sport of baseball, and I don't think Ortiz is as complete a package as Jeter is.

I am a die-hard Sox fan, and I LOVE Jeter. And he's more of a complete package yes. But unless your truly a phenom like Jordan was, I don't think you can be the face of a sport as long as Jeter has been. People get sick of him, and like i said before, the majority hates the yankees. And he is the face of the yankees. So I really don't see how that works out...

LOL, and Babe Ruth HAD the face to sell the sport!

ORtiz is the anti-AROD... he's a fun loving masher in the great tradition of the sports greatest hero... unlike the plastic, coorporate butt-plug in pin-stripes. The idea that A-ROD is the face of baseball is downright pessimistic, but considering the current priorities of much of this nation (materialism, greed.. etc.) I guess the case could be made.

I doubt that. The one thing that attracts people to the Red Sox is that they are a team. I'd wager that most people think of the Red Sox team as the face of that comeback rather than one player.

Some of these myopic New Englanders need to wake up and realize that the world doesn't revolve around their team just because they finally won a World Series after nearly a century.

Ortiz is just another good power hitter on another good team. Nothing too special about that.

Wake me up when he's accomplished something over a number of years, through numerous playoff series.

PayRod is the face of everything that is wrong with Baseball's economics. Jeter is the face of Baseball.
