    Carpenter over Willis?

I'm surprised there isn't more of an uproar over this but LaRussa has picked Chris Carpenter to start in the ASG. I don't really think that was the best move. I think Willis is far more deserving, heck even Clemens should start as well.

This was a situation where Carpenter benefited from having his manager managing the NL squad.

Willis has said he wanted Carpenter to start. He is also on more rest than Willis. And far more deserving? The only major stat which Dontrelle leads in is ERA, and it's by a .10 of a run (Carp has 2 more ER than Willis this year). Carpenter has a lot more Ks and a better WHIP. Plus, look at how they stack up in their last 10 starts:
    Carpenter: 8-2 1.43 ERA
    Willis: 6-3 3.12 ERA

Neither one has a real statistical advantage over the other. Willis started really strong and has cooled off, while Carpenter has done the opposite. I wouldn't have any problem with either of them starting, or Clemens for that matter. But to say that one or the other is "far more deserving" is a huge stretch.

I wouldn't exactly say Willis has cooled off seeing he has had 2 CG/SHO in his last 5 starts and another 7IP SHO. Although he did run into 2 rough games in the mix of those 5 starts. With that said, Willis Clemens and Carpenter all put up a first half deserving a start.

They were both very deserving of getting the start, it's just that Carpenter got the nod.

Why didn't Clemens start? Did he just pitch?

By the numbers, he's the most deserving guy. No one has posted an ERA and dominated the leauge like he was since Bob Gibson. It's too bad he gets no run support or he'd easily have 4-5 more wins. Not to mention the HOU bullpen has blown 3 of his games. So far he's put up one of the better pitching seasons in a long time.

I think it should have been Clemens as well. Oh well still should be a good game.

Im surprised LaRussa pitched his guy at all, let alone start him.

Ehh Tony did us a favor. Let D-Train maybe face 2-3 batters at most and then take him out. We need him for a stretch run anyway forget the all star game.

They should make the voting so the pitcher that gets the most votes should start.

This isn't the first time Larussa has done this. In 4 All Star games that he has managed, he's picked one of his pitchers to start 3 times. I don't know what that means, but it doesn't look real good. Clemens should be starting.

Clemens pitched Friday, so it would not be normal rest. I'm not sure if that factored in or not.

And from what I've read on Willis, they were planning on saving him until Lo Duca comes in to catch.

Ahh, thanks. That probably played somewhat of a factor.

Clemens started last year and got raped. Plus I'm sure the Astros want him to be fresh to make their playoff run

I forgot about that. He did get lit up last year. I still think he deserves to start this year when looking at his numbers. But if he started Friday then he'll probably just go 1 inning in the middle of the game.

HOU better get some offense quick if they want to really compete for the wild card. I don't see any way STL gives up the division lead.
