Funny thing is that once upon a time he was a 16 game winner along with a no-hitter. But guys that live throwing 85 MPH (except knuckleballers) fastballs arent going to put up good numbers in the current "juiced era". His main pitch is a forkball which isnt difficult to hit when the pitcher isnt throwing above the low 90's.

Some people said his windup may be a borderline balk.

No offense, but you know it's bad when you're released by Tampa Bay...

There might be some team out there willing to give him a chance but i think his career is over.

I think he was more about his pitching style then skill.

Do you remember how reporters were pretty much up his *** when they first saw him throw a pitch? Its funny how these little things make people jump.

First it was Hideo, then it was Dontrelle. Theres probably more in between, but those are the only 2 that popped in my head.

Well he's thrown a pair of no-hitters so he has to have done something right.

His career is pretty much over. Unless he's gonna be used for bullpen help. Lol.

But on a more serious note, he was probably the first Japanese player to ever excel in the big leagues. Don't forget that this guy has something close to 2000 K's and a no-hitter to his credentials. So that really paved the way for guys like Matsui to come to the big leagues to succeed and make $.

Yea, he definately shouldn't really be that ashamed. Thanks for the no-hitter for the Sox Nomo.

I disagree, there are a number of pitchers who throw in the mid 80's who are successful. Omar Daal, Bruce Chen, and Jamie Moyer are all examples of guys who have had success and who rarely get above 85 (I dont think Moyer's seen it in years). I watched the firest 3 innings of the A's game last night (before it became a full-fledged blowout) and I only saw Zito get above 85 once. Notice one thing about all those guys: they are left-handed. The only guy I can think of who I've seen at the velocity who is right-handed is Paul Byrd...actually now that I think of it, Livan Hernandez is in the 85-87 mph range.

The question then is whether these pitcher would be successful if they were right-handed. Personally I think they would be. I mean, if a guy has the kind of control Moyer has and pitches as intellegently, but were a righty, I dont see why he couldnt have success. Same thing for Zito - if the guy was accurate with his fastball and had a 3 foot curve I would think he would be successful.

However I think that there is a bias against righties; an assumption that they have to throw at least 90 to be successful and therefor it's more difficult to get a shot for them. I mean look around baseball, especially in the bullpens, there are very few righties who can't hit 92-93.

WEEI is reporting that Nomo is close to signing a deal with the Yankees.

With Brown still hurting and Pavano's return getting pushed back, they don't have too many other options.

I think you kinda contradicted yourself in that paragraph. If he's thrown a couple no-hitters and had some 16+ win seasons, then obviously you can put up good numbers in the juiced era. If anything he put up his best numbers in that era seeing as though we know have a new "policy" in place.
